A few old construction photos from the early 1970's of AON and Sears Tower. This was before it was the in thing to build tall scrapers. The world is copying North America :)

AON, the white building predates the former World Trade Towers in NYC(may they rest in peace).

Also One Bennett Park (451 E Grand) at 850 FT will start construction next month(bottom right). Another boring design, and this one is pretty big so it will stick out. :(

They are doing site prep for the Wanda Vista already. Will start full construction in July/August. First over 1100 foot tall building for Chicago since Trump Tower Chicago finished.

New updated plan for Cook County Hospital. Love the way this large building looks and glad this plan to save it looks promising. Also a bonus photo of a Martin Mars docking by Northerly Island in 1949 with the Adler Planetarium in the background. This is right by the former Meigs Field Airport on the lake.

    Tommy,

Thank you for posting the pics of the Exposition... wonderful.

I have a print of the poster that Richard Hunt's office did of his Administration Building (top right of your group) hanging in my office. Hard to believe that it was a 'temporary' building, as many of them were.

Appreciate your thread... there's a lot going on in Chicago.

Have you read "The Devil and the White City" (Larson)? Great book.

Yes, and I think they caught him in 1895. He was a doctor.

1893 was an amazing fair and most consider it to be the best worlds fair ever. You have to remember that after they spent to much money on the fair it kind of put the city into a recession. That in turn allowed most of the buildings to go into disrepair for many years allowing them to be abandoned. Some of the vendor buildings were still standing into the 1930's.

Chicago has been picking up on high rise construction again, second to NYC as usual. Chicago does try to out do NYC so the competition can be interesting. What Chicago is doing down by the river is amazing and it is making the city look much more "polished" than NYC ever has(or as I like to call it Zoo York).

Here are the three building from the 1893 Worlds Fair that are still in Chicago standing. The rest were burned down or torn down. The last photo shows the remains after a fire destroyed much of it in 1894. Plans had been made to save portions but after this fire only the three were saved along with several smaller buildings that were relocated to the north east USA. The Field Museum was moved to it's present location from it's original location near Jackson Park. Kind of a shame when you consider the 1893 Worlds Fair was larger than even the Museum Campus in Washington D.C.
