The top pic makes it look like dueling Sears (Willis) Towers... Congrats on starting this great thread about Chicago architecture. Good stuff.
I think Chicago does ok but builds to many value engineered buildings for my taste, but that's what makes money. I hope they do something really special on the old Spire site. 1200 S Indiana at 887 FT and 78 FLOORS is now under construction. That makes 2 almost 900 foot tall buildings and 1 1200 foot tall building under construction in Chicago. 2 more 900 foot tall buildings are close to construction starts and should be ready by early 2017...We have almost 50 300-600 foot tall buildings under construction, second in the US to only NYC. Not a bad year for Chicago. This is the kind of Chicago news the NY based media does not report.
1000 S. Michigan Avenue update rendering viewed from where 1200 S. Indiana will be. The Essex tower on Michigan Ave. will start construction in February 2017. If they do start 1000 South Michigan early next year that would make 3 900 foot tall building under construction in downtown Chicago. They are building a Skyscraper wall in South Grant Park. I do not like the lower part of this building. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Another one, to take the General Growth buildings lot on the south branch. 110 N. Wacker office tower around 800ft. PD filed tomorrow 01/18/17 Image Unavailable, Please Login
More photos of 110 N Wacker at 800 FT and 52 FLOORS. I like the way it sticks out over the river. The rest of the building is ok. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Another massive building supported on 'visual toothpicks', no matter how cute the arrangement. Does it actually extend over the river? Doesn't quite look like it..
According to the drawings they released it does slightly. The building looks a lot like 150 N Riverside with a different base. The fact that it is so close to the river is cool, but we have seen a lot of this blue glass with setbacks all over the world and I am getting tired of it already. They could atleast change the color, as they have a few choices that would be energy efficient.
By the way, the location of this building in Chicago will make it almost completely hidden in the skyline. Only two places in America that a 800 foot tall building would not be visible, NYC and Chicago. NYC is really pulling away from Chicago right now. A lot of the new buildings over 1000 feet in NYC are very narrow rentals and Condos, but still impressive in design.
Yes, those New York "super slims" are almost disconcertingly skinny. As an interesting aside, they are generating a planning controversy due to the impact of their shadows on Central Park. Lots of peripheral impacts when you put up big/tall structures.
One South Halsted to start construction now.....Around 500 feet tall and looking rather nice. It was supposed to start last June. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hate to be on the top floor on a windy day!! Those are really skinny towers in NYC. Chicago likes 500-1000 foot and fat
This tower keeps showing up in new renderings with some speculating it might be a real proposal for the Related Spire site. We will see. It is dramatic and big, Gensler's Gateway tower. This photo does not show the Wanda Vista tower across the river now under construction. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow, spectacular. That might end up like the Citi Corp building in Manhattan... People (tourists) are afraid to walk under it; it looks like a gust could topple it.
Final Essex on the Park design. Demo on old structure almost done and should start construction in April. Just over 600 feet tall, but right next to Grant Park. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wolf Point East to start construction in May. Around 750 feet tall it is the smaller tower on the right. The middle Wolf Point South tower is not due to start until the east tower is completed. This development is owned by the Kennedy family. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Another new proposal. The 725 foot tall 60 story Carillon.......The base is interesting but the top makes it look like a closet storage rack. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
More photos of 110 N Wacker at 800 FT with 52 FLOORS. It was approved today and they hope to start construction later this year. Not sure if the river line is a build out. As you can see the building does not stick out over the river in these renderings. More photos of 1000 S Michigan Avenue. Essex and 1200 South Indiana are not shown in the photo and they are both under construction and almost as tall if not taller than 1000 S. A city in a city on the south corner of Grant Park. I love what they are doing in downtown Chicago, but I also love what they are doing in NYC. Someone should start a Skyscraper NYC thread. 1326 South Michigan to start construction in May(blue glass building in the middle). Around 500 feet tall and just south of 1200 S Indiana and Essex both now under construction. Image Unavailable, Please Login
A photo with all the new buildings but Somi in the south loop... Also a good rendering of 1000 S MA. One Grant Park Essex 1000 S Michigan Avenue Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Union Station Redevelopment ...What a bunch of rubbish!!! The new design makes to old design look great. Atleast in NYC and D.C. they come up with some innovative ideas when it comes to Fed approved designs, this looks like a suburban Dallas/Atlanta/Chicago office complex plopped on the top of Union Station. Total crap. Photo 1 new proposal photo 2 original 1920's proposal. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wolf Point east tower(in the middle) to start construction in a week or two. Around 750 feet tall. This is right at the intersection that joins the north and south river branches to the east branch. Should make a good impact. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Updated Lakeshore East diagram. Site parcel O is proceeding now with a 700 foot tall building. Up on top you can see the 1200 foot tall Wanda Vista site now under construction. The lakefront I, J, K and L sites are still unknown. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31451100/LSE%20Site%20Plan_O_IJKL%20%281%29.PDF Image Unavailable, Please Login
