My cousin is deciding between the two. He test-drove both and actually preferred the SL. I want him to get the Ferrari because, well it's a Ferrari. If you guys can post some points or links about why he should get the Ferrari, that'd be great. I'll print them out and give them to him. Thanks.

cant really compare the 2. whats his motivation? if purely status then go ferrari which is much less common than mb esp since 55 looks identical to regular sl. if performance or track driving then obviously ferrari also. go with mb if want everyday car, comfortable cruiser, open top, ease/cost of service and reliability.

If he needs it as a daily driver then the Sl55 AMG

If its a fun car. Then the Ferrari 360.

The SL55 beats the 360 in every single comparable aspect except the "wow" factor and self agrandizing ego boost you get from being seen in and driving a 360.

And.....there's nothing wrong with feeling like you do when you drive an F-car........he just has to decide if the price of entry and many deficiencies when compared to the SL55 are worth it.

If he thinks they are....then he should go for it....they are both great cars......both are lots of fun......but both are very different in so many ways.

What is he looking for? A daily driver, or just a once or twice a week car to go and cruise and have some fun in? If he wants the daily driver, i think i would go with the SL55. If not... 360 ALLLLLLLLL the way.

Why MB? Its the worst production car on the planet.

PS....tell your cousin that comparing anyother automoblie to an fcar.....he shouldnt be buying the fcar. He is obviously not aware of what a ferrari is. Since he's thinking commuter, I heard Kia has some great rates.

Is this really a question.......... Damn I am going to the high courts. SL is nice but like all Benz's not a comparable object to Ferrari. Now Gallardo is something..

i have both, the 360 spider and the sl55 here's what i think

    Sl55:
    Muscle car sound
very comfortable compared to the 360
feels more powerful, due to much higher torque
hardtop convertible, cant really beat that..imo looks great
the seats are much more comfortable
    build quality is amazing
can be used as a daily driver if necessary
does not attract as much attn
has basically any kind of features u want, from massage seats to voice control (way too many to list)
    much more practical

    360spider:
gets A LOt of attention, even in black
    high pitched sound...i love it
you feel like a racecar drive in it
personally i feel nervous parking it anywhere, or leaving it for extended periods of time
details inside are not as perfect as in the sl...for ex: the passenger vanity mirror is crap

i can go on for days talking about these two cars...
these two are almost impossible to compare practically, thus it would be a matter of what you really want. If you dont feel that passionate about ferrari, than i would go with the sl55, because it is an amazing car...
but if you're in love with ferrari, no amount of extra features and extra horsepower on the sl can substitute for the feeling one gets driving a ferrari.

Thanks for the replies, but it's too late. He saw an SL55 on Auto Trader and made a deal with the seller. He's picking it up next weekend.

In response to some of the questions:
-He doesn't care about status, and doesn't drive much on the track.
-You could call it a daily driver. He has 4 other cars (Range, Boxster S, LS430, and M3 Dinan) and they are all daily drivers.

He said he didn't want to get a Ferrari or Lambo at this time because:
    (1) They attract way too much attention and people keep asking him too many questions about what he does etc...He likes to keep a relatively low profile. I told him who cares what other people say, but he didn't listen.
    (2) He loves going on long drives (and I mean long....East to West Coasts) and said he would probably get sore in an exotic.
    (3) The comfort and luxury in the SL are unmatched.

Hopefully he will get one in the future, or maybe I will in a few years.

GDAutosport, exactly. You posted your reply while I was typing mine. He had the same points as you. Regarding being passionate about Ferrari's, I think every guy is. However, owning a sports car vs. just dreaming about one is a totally different thing. You really have to worry about stuff like where to park so that no one vandalizes or scratches your car, what people will say about you, maintaining it, etc...I have a 996 cabrio myself, and although I love it, it's a whole different ball game from when I was dreaming about it vs. when I actually got it. My cousin is crazy, he might get a sixth car in a few months, who knows. I know that his next car will definitely be exotic as now he pretty much has everything else.

604HP Twin Turbo sounds good to me for about $180,000. The SLR is only about 35HP more and costs over $500,000

I think the Ferrari is great if you can actually be one of those people that will drive it anywhere and park anywhere and not give it a second thought. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people and although I have a Bentley that is worth much more than my Ferrari, I never felt comfortable driving my Ferrari anywhere that it needed to be left in a lot or street. I drive the Bentley everywhere without a second thought. I don't know what my problem is but I think many feel the same way and therefore they don't get driven. An Sl55 is worth more than my 355 spider and I wouldn't have a problem driving that everyday either. Go figure. If I get another exotic, it will be a used one with some miles and rock chips so I will feel comfortable driving it. Buying a pristine car is not the way to go for me.

yes the sl55 does have the performance to back itself up. however, i drove one and they are quite different in the lively/handling dept.
it doesn't feel anywhere close to the 360 in terms of tossing it about enthusiastically.

that said, i love it. i looked at one and went 360. (the other way)

eh, it's all personal choice anyway.
the mercedes benz is luxury sports
    the ferrari is sport passion

Let me put it this way. The SL55 is a beatiful brunette and the 360 is a gorgeous blond. Which one do you want to leave in a bar alone for 10 minutes while you go out to check your car?

I would say the 360, at least its a Ferrari. Both of them are pretty close, SL55 is not a bad choice if he doesn't want to spend the extra money
