Ok well I own a 2007 997 Turbo Coupe and a 2007 Mercedes S550 4MATIC. I am looking for a car that I can really enjoy, and take out on occasions, (I use the Porsche a lot almost as an everyday car.)

So I konw everyone hear are Ferrari lovers, I love them two, but I also have a passion for Mercedes. So when I realized the difference in servicing and maintaining I started to look at the SL63. It also makes a really good sound! Look at a video of one on YouTube they're great.

So which one would you guys vote SL63 or F355

    Thanks,
    John

If you want a car that will depreciate faster than AIG stock, get the car that's only one letter different. Check the resales on similar cars in recent times.

355s are virtually at the bottom of their possible depreciation curve. You can buy one, enjoy it, and not take a $50k bath over the course of the next 18-24 months.

Plus, it's a Ferrari. Not 'another' Mercedes.

Look into 05 or 06 SL-65's. You can pick them up under $100K and with 600 HP and 700+ Ftlbs of torque they have LOADS of power. Some actually like the Twin Turbo 12 Cly more than the N/A SL63. The SL-65's had a window sticker of around $190,000+...just be glad you didn't buy one new!

The SL is much more of a daily driver than the 355. Pick what suits your lifestyle the best.

Same here. It's not even a competition that the 355 is better looking.

    Kudos for "geezer glider." :)

Haven't driven a 355, but I've been told their one of the most drivable Ferraris, right? With that tossable V8? So I wouldn't award the Merc too many extra points for being a better daily driver.

    Is this thread for real?

You've already got the Porsche/Mercedes thing covered - nice daily driver German cars. The used car market is choked with depreciating Merc convertibles and, at least around here, in used Porsches.

Go get a Ferrari. If you think the Merc sounds good, you haven't heard the F355.

    Here's some info. you need:

    1. Educated opinion

Just because you can pick up SL65 that's a year or two old for cheap doesn't mean it's a better car. The SL63 is redone in a positive way. Other than the styling, the car gets a clutch operated 7 speed tranny. Automated clutch, NOT torque converter.

The steering and handling have also been well revised, and the car is a beauty. Even as an avid SL hater, I actually enjoy the new SL.

    2. Toys

355 is much more of a toy than any SL. If you're finding your Turbo to be more of a daily commuter, then you're definitely going to find the SL boring after a while as it is much more of a sports car than the SL is.

    3. Conclusion

I think a 355 is the right car for you! Enjoy it.

Why would you want an SL as a toy when you use a 997 Turbo daily ? the Turbo is much more of a toy than an SL can ever dream of .

    Get a 355 !

    PIG? :p

AMG's depreciation I'd think would be closer to the price of a 355 than just $50k.

Thanks for your help guys, I am defiantly going with a Ferrari,

Then I realized the difference in maintenance costs between the 360 and 355 and thought I could spend the extra money for a 360 instead of paying to have the engine taken dropped out of a 355!

    355 or 360 now?

    Thanks
    John

    Hi John. :)

    My opinion:

When I started shopping for a Ferrari I had 360 money to spend, so I looked at 360's but I was always drawn across the showroom to the 355's,I have always loved the 355. For me the look of the 355 is far better than the 360, a 360 is a large sports car, it feels large, the cabin access is easy, just getting into a 355 is an experience, people struggle to climb across the step, this, for me is part of the exotic ownership experience. When someone hops into my car for the first time they will remember how awkward it was, its the little things like that that add to the experience. A 360 is a great car but the look is not for me. It is a very usable car but I somewhat doubt it will be a future classic, the 355 is already a classic Ferrari, the last of a breed of Ferrari's. Drive both, you will instantly know which you prefer.

This is an awesome decision to be making. They are both Ferrari's and will give you no end of pleasure, and can kill your bank account....... Both can.

It is also worth adding, don't worry too much about some peoples opinions on the "expensive" maintenance of the 355, mine has been great, almost as cheap as my 911 to maintain.

The 360 is lighter than the 355, mainly due to the ultra light chassis.

It certainly is. Around 60kg lighter according to my sources. ;);)

The 360 is a larger car inside and out compared to the 355. The 360 has an ALL aluminium body which is why it is a bigger car, but weighs less than the 355. :):)

I love them both, GREAT cars!! :D:D

Thanks for your help, that does help me a lot. I have driven a 360, amazing car, I need to test drive a 355. I do know what you mean about the classic Ferrari part.

Could you give me the idea of the servicing costs you have had with your 355? How much does a 15,000 mile service cost, (engine out)

One more thing, is it a 6 speed or F1?
    Thanks,
    John

    Yes, they are. :):)

    Yes, you do. :D:D

The 355 has CLASSIC Ferrari looks. The 308 started it all. Followed by the 328, 348 and the 355. All have the classic Ferrari look/shape that we have all loved since the first 308 over 25 years ago. :):)

Depends on where you live man, trust me. ;);)
And the prices vary A LOT!! Depending on which workshop you use and how many parts are required for the major etc.....:eek:

In Australia have seen around US $5000.
In England have seen around US $1300
In America have seen around US $6000.

What Country do you live in? :):)

    He owns a 6 speed. ;);)

    I own a CLK 63 conv and a 02 360 spider, and various versions of 911s.
MB is the least of my favorites. Once you get over the power of 6.2L motor, the car is pretty boring.(NO SOUL)
Also word of advice, 6.2L motor is very sensitive to the type of fuel you put in it, borderline gets by with 93 oct, if you live in CA region 91 oct pump gas isn't gonna cut it. Detention always been a problem for me.
You mentioned concerns about service, do yourself a favor, call a MB dealership, ask them how much they charge for a break job on the SL63? Make sure you are holding on to something.
Well, that's my 2 cents worth, good luck
