Well, after mixed emotions on what to get for a second "fun" car I am going to pick up the SL65 Silver Arrow tomorrow. The car has everything I like in a car except the real "coolness" factor that comes with a Ferrari or Lambo. I am going this way because I need something that is very useable and something that can carry some luggage every once in a while. Also, since it looks like any other benz it can be parked anywhere without raising an eyebrow. I am looking forward to the power and features but was really looking forward to a G car. I figure this can tide me over till the Spyder can be had at MSRP!

Great choice. Haven't driven the 65 but I've been fortunate enough to put 1000 +/- miles on the 55 and absolutely love it, the best all around car I've EVER driven.

    Impressive collection you have btw.

I've driven a few, and they are awesomely powerful. The only thing...The exhaust needs to be louder!

Both the SL55 and SL65 are awesome cars!

Not exactly sports cars but as far as sports GT locomotive cruisers! These cars rule!

renntech has a package that includes an ECU upgrade and transmission computer upgrade that boosts hp from 604 to 650-670 and tq from 738 to 840. that would certainly be fun

Wayne Basenko from Powerchip sent me a dynograph of a CL65 last week. The thing that most surprised me is the 65 had only 20kw more power than my S600 on the same dyno. Std S600 320kw, CL65 340kw, chipped CL65 367kw. We built an E55 that put out 380kw on the same dyno. The exhaust note on the '55 is much tougher IMO and you don't have turbo lag or the extra 200kg weight over the front wheels to deal with.
    Still a beautiful car though.

Well, after a nice 3hr drive home from the Benz dealer in PA I can say the SL hauls a**! It will be a really useable fun car and that is what I was looking for. I rode up with a friend in his C6 vette and we had some fun on I-95 on the way home. The benz easily blows by the vette at highway speeds and the power is so smooth you don't realize how fast it really is. I do agree the SL55 sounds better so if anyone knows of a good fix for this car let me know. I heard the turbos kill the sound. Other than that the thing is loaded with creature comforts and is very comfortable on the highway. I am sure it would be a plow on the track but hopefully it will be more nimble than I expect. Too bad it doesn't look like a ferrari or lambo or it would be the perfect car for me!

I don't know the aftermarket exhaust on the SL65 AMG in town here but that thing sounds awesome. The older gentlemen throws a thumbs up the last time I spotted him in my 465hp C5 Z06. Cool guy...cool car and it sounded awesome. If I see him anytime in the near future I'll be sure to ask him which exhaust he's got on that V12 turbo road rocket!

I'm sure any Mercedes forum can give you a sound bite to chose from.

    Enjoy that awesome car!

If you want it to sound really cool, larger turbos are the way to go :)
There's nothing like the sound of a big turbo spooling up.

You will find very little if any aftermarket
A good exhaust shop and some experimentation is your best bet IMO.

You will find that very few "gentleman" enthusiasts, frequent mbworld and the like. The number of people who modify the V12 MB is EXTREMELY limited.

I picked up a 55 a few months ago and I have been pretty impressed with it. I put the SL65 wheels and tires on it, handles better than I thought it ever would. You might try Eisenmann, I have heard their exhaust on an SL600 and it really sounded great. Enjoy.

Hey I see you are near DC. I am Baltimore, would you mind getting together sometime? I would love to see the 65 up close. I was thinking of getting a 600 myself.

They had an SL65 at a recent VMAX top speed event on a runway at Bruntingthorpe in the UK. The SL65 was the fastest car on the day back in October 04 running up to 193mph IIRC. The only things to beat it since have been heavily tuned Vipers and 911s! A seriously cool car!! :D

or go crazier, drop another 100k+ and get one of those Fisker Tramontos that all the magazines have been talking about. he would certainly have a one of a kind car then

I can't imagine Fisker will have much success, charging as much as he does for a rebody and an interior refit. As far as mechanical midifications go, he uses Kleeman components, which are available to anyone, so he has nothing unique in the mechanical department.

They are pretty rare. It is a cool truck! I tried to post a few pics but I guess they are all too large and I don't know how to re-size them. If you google g500 cabriolet I am sure there will be many pictures.

Sure, if the weather breaks a little. The 600 is the best bang for the buck and can be modified to produce similar numbers for not much money. Have you driven one yet?

Just the 500 and 55. 500 is fun with 7 gears!

I hear you about the weather we are having recently. Did it sleet/hail down there too? It was up in North Baltimore (tiny pieces of hail, just enough that you felt them as they hit you like little bits of cold sand). Today is clear, but to d@mn cold! And its supposed to rain again soon!

I miss the summer already. :(
