I was at the Danville car show today and saw a slate (dull) black/gray CGT. Upon closer examination, I found that it really was a silver car but with a slate black (or gray) film over the entire car. E.g., looked like 3M stuff but a slate black/gray color.

I’m sure this is not new to many of you folks out there, but it sure was new to me!

We did a flat black wrap on a CGT a few months ago and it came out great. It took the company about two days to complete it and it was very reasonably priced.

How long does the application last on the car? Also, what's a ballpark price for something like this?

Other than the obvious change of color what's the purpose of "wrapping" the car?

As you've pointed out the obvious which is enough within itself, it also offers protection to the original paint as the clear film.
