My wife and kids are all sick with some sort of stomach thing. They were all up all night yesterday. I have had some chest thing for about 2 weeks. I get maybe 4-5 hours.

I forgot what more then 6 hours feels like.

Right now I am so tired but I can't sleep

I took the night flight to the UK this summer so i arrived at about 9AM UK time. By 1pm i was out. I had been up for about 48 hours. My plan was to try to stay awake the whole time then go to bed in the evening UK time and automatically get adjusted. It didn't work. I was shattered and actually fell asleep while my grandparents were talking to me. That was at about 2pm. My other grandparents (who i was staying with) woke me up at 8pm. i went right to bed and slept 'till 1pm the next day. So, forgetting the 5mins it took me to get in my pj's and from the sofa to the bed at 2:30, about 12 hours. Bad idea to take the night flight.

I am sure I've had longer but I can do 17 hours on a Friday/Saturday. I often only get 5-6 hours during the week, and it catches up with me on Friday. I often am just dead and pass out at 8pm and sleep right through until 1pm the next day. The bad thing about it is you feel tired all the next day. I have to work hard to keep my sleep normal. If I keep it to 7-9 hours a night every night, I feel great all week.

it depends on timing and how exhausted you are. long sleep can be good or bad.

i hate sleep, either you have to get up early for something (work, school, event) and dont get enough sleep = tired. or you sleep too much trying to catch up = tired

i havent figured out how to get the "right" amount of sleep yet

come to think of it i need to go to sleep right now, been up for 16 hrs, and i can barely type properly

    I've done 14 hours, but that's pretty rare.. it's usually between 4-6 hours/night.

The trick (I've found) to feeling refreshed after waking up is to get out of bed as soon as you're up. Hitting the snooze button or rationalizing staying in bed only makes me grumpy and useless, I'll have plenty of time to spend laying down when I'm not breathing.

For some of us, that is impossible :p. I'll usually set my alarm 40 minutes before I actually get up.

8hrs is my ideal, any more and I wake up tired and feel off all day. I have slept almost 20hrs once, after staying awake for an entire week for final exams. The worst is falling asleep on the couch, go up to bed at 2AM and stare at the ceiling for two hours before you fall back asleep.
