I am considering buying The "Slick Shift gate" type 1 from hill engeneering for a 348 spider. Anyone have these and is it worthwhile?

I got one and quite like it. In my opinion it does make for more fluid shifts. With our hard to shift gearbox, every little bit helps.

Many 348's have worn off the reverse-lockout tab on the OEM shift gate, so buying the new Hill gate will return that safety feature to your car (as well as enable faster, quieter shifts).

Grinding down the multi-thousand Dollar OEM shift gate *will* give you the better shifts (e.g. less click-clack noise and faster gear-changes), but what it *won't* do is restore your Reverse-Gear-lockout safety feature.

The Reverse-lockout tab on the underside of your OEM shift gate tends to wear away. When it wears away enough, you can shift into Reverse **without** pressing down on your gearshift's stick.

The comparitively inexpensive Hill shift gate, however, will give you back that Reverse gear lockout safety feature...so that you can't accidently shift into Reverse instead of 2nd gear (at speed!). So the Hill shift gate saves your hyper-expensive OEM part, gives you the less-noisy and faster gear changes, as well as restores your lost safety Reverse-lockout feature.

I guess that I'm just lucky that mine is still in tact ;)

Honestly, though... No Doubt does seem to know exactly what he's talking about when he talks about a 348!

    I love mine from Hill.

Only complaint I could have is that it is not "very stainless" steal. Mine has developed some staining and rusty places that have to be dealt with with steel wool.

I had one on my 87 328 GTS, when I sold the car, I later sold the gate to a friend with a 348. I found little difference in operation.

I love mine. I bought it from Hill Eng. for my 308. I kept the gate when i sold the 308 and put it in my 348.

For me it works just fine, but remember to keep it lightly greased, this too helps the shifter slide easily in and out and prevents unnecessary wear.
