    Hi all

I've just been out for an hour in my '01 360 (7000 miles). I've not had it long so I'm just getting used to the various sounds of the engine at various rev ranges.

I noticed today, that through a certain rev range - mostly 3-4k rpm - I get a slightly tinny sound to the exhaust note which then continues on to the throaty roar you'd expect - is this normal or should it be low and throaty all the way up the range?

I've also noticed a ticking noise that I can only hear with the roof down which I'm assuming is noisy tappets - which I've heard on several cars before. I've read that these aren't necessarily a problem but has anyone dealt with noisy tappets before? Is it an expensive job to get fixed? Is it worth getting done? I find it a annoying but then I'm very anal with noises and creaks and squeaks.

Dropping to 4th or 5th at 50mph and flooring it - could there ever be a better noise than that?? :)

Better make sure you are not hearing cracked exhaust manifolds (exhaust leaks go tic tic tic)... If you are, the next sound you could possibly here will be many hundreds/thousands of $$$$'s hitting the service counter...

Get an opinion of noise from someone with expierence with cracked headers..

A sign of cracked headers is that the ticking sound is louder when cold than when warmed up or hot. This is because heat expansion tends to seal up leaks. If they are leaking when hot, there is a serious issue. But the only real way to tell, however, is with a smoke test.

As for the sound quality change between low and high RPM, the stock exhausts have valves in them that are normally closed but open at high RPM, so that they're quieter at lower RPM.

It's a very constant tick (actually more of a muffled tick) - that increases in relation to the revs which is what made me think it's noisy tappets. I'm taking it in on wednesday so will get them to check it then.

    Thanks for the quick replies

if it's the lifters which is fairly common I hear you can change to mobile one oil which normally resolves the issue

There is only one way to produce a better noise at 50 mph which is to drop it to 3rd gear. :)

That still gives you some room to play in the RPM band. :)

    Hi guys

Had my 360 checked out this morning by a Ferrari technician and the ticking noise is nothing to worry about apparently, I think maybe I was just being a bit paranoid as now it doesn't seem to be quite so loud! He mentioned something about butterflies but nothing is wrong.

There's something reassuring about taking an experienced Ferrari mechanic out in your new car and him say it sounds great!

A crack exhaust manifold or just simple loose headers bolts. I've also noticed that the CAT sits right above the thin heat shield above the CV boot can cause tin like noise too if they are slightly touching.

    You acted right!!
When you find a suspicious noise in the engine you never act paranoid, it is better be careful than ignorant!

I’m happy that it turns good for you!
