I have a regular 458 Italia that I drive on the track and I was talking to someone there that told me that many Porsche track day guys buy slightly used (used only for a practice session maybe) race tires to use on their car at the track.
So here are my few questions:
Are the 458 challenge tires usable on a regular 458 Italia? What's the sizes of the challenge tires?
Are there slightly used slick tires available to purchase? Where?
How much better are those tires than the new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2?

    Thanks

Ferrari specifically outlines not using slicks for the Standard road use 458, bulletin number 1806 and owners manual. ABS and traction control will not work properly, just as it is not with the Speciale tires you installed. Incorrect wheel speed input and overactive traction control and the increased speeds the car will carry through corners will really put a load on the brakes particularly the rear brakes. If you decide to do it anyway you should upgrade the brakes with Ferrari's new track package which has new pads, calipers and ducting to cool the brakes specifically for track use of the street car.
In addition it puts much more load on the wheel bearings and suspension components and will drastically increase their wear.

In addition how fast and hard do you want to push a car with no cage, Hans devise or proper race harness. Even in stock trim the car is fast enough to get into a lot of trouble on the track.

I realize there will now be many replies stating they have used slicks with no issues, I respect your opinion but I see all the people that do have the problems.

    Thanks windsock for the answer.
Will the increase brake wear (with the Speciale tires) happen in all settings of the manineto?

What is your goal at the track day? Any kind of hard use will increase the wear, the slicks just make it a little harder on the car and wear a little faster. If you're after lap times, it's worth it. But if you're just out to have fun, you'll probably have more fun on street tires and it will be safer for you as your cornering speeds will be lower if you end up going off track. Street tires are also more predictable and have more tolerance for over doing it.

Yes the brake wear will increase. Actual wear will depend on what Manetino setting you have it in. Keep in mind that even if you turn all traction control off you brake force required to get to ABS and the speed of the car will be greatly increased resulting in a lot more energy being put into the brakes. I would not use brake fluid designed for street use either. I would suggest moving up to the Brembo fluid used in the Challenge cars at that point. Many others will suggest different brands but all should be recommend moving up in fluid boiling point ratings.

I'll give your questions a try

458C wheels are 19 inches, so you'd need a separate set of wheels to start with. (which is a decent idea if you track often)

The spec Pirelli DH Challenge tire is "ok". Depending on your driving, you may get one full day out of a set. They are golden for the first heat cycle, then degrade pretty steadily.

I would never use a set of used tires, other than a teammates so we know EXACTLY the usage and history.

Using slicks on a road car is questionable. To start with, you will need/want a substantial change to your chassis setup to get the most out of them. Second, the grip level is high enough that (as commented), you are stressing other parts of the suspension a LOT. Plus, sizing differences will affect all sorts of systems on the road car.

Yes, track-specific slicks are much better than even the most extreme street tire. Having said that, there are some DOT-spec hyper-aggressive road tires out there.

Personally, I would not go so far as to drive my street car hard enough on track where slicks would matter. Forget the tires, but if I'm going that hard, I want a cage/harness/HANS/et al.

Great that you are "tracking" your car - they are a blast. When/if you start worrying about lap times vs. perfect technique, I'd switch up to a dedicated track car.

Source for tires? Bob Woodman tires. they supply race tires to most of the series in NA. If you want Michelins, (which are great), you have to work with the Michelin distributor.

    hope this helps

If I were you, I would visit this website: John Berget Racing Tires or call them directly.

They have VERY good used tires (Michellin, Dunlop Yokohama, Hoosier etc...) and sometimes, some tires used just for one heat or one qualification session, and they as far as cost, they are about 75% less than the new ones.

I buy tires from them for practice sessions or private driving events. I been really happy.

To give you an idea, a complete set of Pirelli from my 430 Challenge did cost me $600.00 and shipping ground comes up to about $200.00 . Do the maths...

Let me know how it goes for you.
