I recently purchased a 1:12 scale F40 model kit and it has 5 slots below the rear fin. I also own a 1:18 die cast F40 with the 5 slots, but most commonly only see 4. What is the difference in the number of slots? I read it once on here but forgot, and can't seem to find the reference again. Thanks for any help. :)

I believe that some of the F40 prototypes featured the 5 slots.

A lot of times diecast companies are given access to prototypes for their modeling efforts so the details they capture may not be 100% true to the production cars. That gets carried over to their finished product and sometimes leaves enthusiasts scratching their heads.

The Maisto McLaren F1 is the same way with a few details that don't quite match the production F1s.

Yup, the extra vents below the sides of the wing were only on the prototypes....

One more view of the same F40.
With only a mirror on the drivers side mounted in the early position (not down lower on the top edge of the door) could this be s/n 73015? Saw this F40 but can't recall the serial number. The car by then was about 7 years old and had been freshly repainted.

Thanks for the info, guys. I thought I once heard it has something to do with Enzo, but I guess not. I have the Supercars F40 book, but haven't completely read or studied the details, but as always you guys have great insight. :)

It might be interesting to do this model as the prototype version, but I may just do the USA version for now. Perhaps I'll do some other variations later.

Which style of rear window does the model have? The first picture in post #4 clearly shows the flat rear window with small slots. The later production version had the slots indented and of a different shape. 18 slots for the early version but only 11 slots for the production version.

I believe it has the 11 slots. Also, the model does not have the vents on the top of the engine lid (below spoiler). I'm sure there are several other things different, and this is very interesting to find out. :)

That's odd, I think even the prototypes even had those 6 slots below the rear wing.

My mistake, I just got home and double checked...it does have the slots. :)
