I was out for a "moderate speed" drive yesterday. After an hour or so, I got both lights. The SD light went out fairly quickly, but ABS stayed on; nothing felt wrong, so I continued home without stopping. I didn't stomp on the brakes to test the anti skid function.

I rebooted (started) the car again an hour or so later, and all the lights came on and went out as they should. I'm assuming this was a rogue electron named Marelli floating around, and not a $5K fix. Any thoughts?

The two lights are unrelated as to their actual diagnostic meaning so I would say thst it is a rogue event.

Not so rogue. The same thing happened last weekend 4-5 times. Either two or three times there was a noticeable momentary interruption in power; the other times I felt nothing. My garage is replacing one of my "black boxes" with a new & improved green one. He felt so confident that he didn't even check codes. (The ABS light always came on and stayed on until car was restarted.)

That is a good start for fixing the SDL issue. The typical way of diagnosing the SDL is to exchnage or swap the SDECUs until the problem is resolved. I have put taps on the my outputs of the SDECUs and monitored their respective voltage outputs real time to determine what the problem is.

The thermocouples can also be faulty and the problem. If you're problem isn't resolved with the new SDECU you may have an issue elsewhere and there is a better way to diagnose it than just buying and replacing things.

Don't throw out your old black SDECU. It may not be bad.

FYI you wont necessarily get an OBD code on account of the SDECU system throwing a SDL. In other words there may not be anything to see or read on an OBD reader.

    It's a '96. (Manufactured in '96, not just a late '95.)
