Took my 82 GTSI out for a drive today ,halfway thru the 5-8 slow down lite started to blink on and off.Power was half, slight miss to engine.Got home while engine still running, pulled off coil wire to 5-8 bank.At that point the engine really ran rough.Guess that's good news? What to check next,o2 sensor? DigiPlex? Any one have a simular problem,I don't know what to check next.

Your symptoms indicate that the over-temperature system is working correctly (what a surprise ;)) -- i.e., you had a real problem (low power, rough running) and the exhaust temp increased to the "blink" threshold. A 1982 US 308 doesn't have an O2 sensor. The first thing you should check IMO is your 5-8 ignition system -- e.g., check the extenders for burn holes/opens, put a timing light on each wire to confirm/deny spark, measure the cap contact -to- end of extender resistance, have a look at the cap-rotor-carbon button. If all seems OK there, you can try swapping DigiPlexes, but if the ignition seems OKish, but the bad runability remains then you have to start into the injection system. Good Hunting!

Steve am i paranoid? seems while the engine was running, the drivers side exhaust did not seem to have as much exhaust pressure,as the passenger side.Maybe this is normal due to the lenght of the exhaust pipe,or am i just paranoid? Possible Cat failure?

The stock F mufflers tend to be asymmetric inside, so unless you have a Tubi, or some other aftermarket muffler that has a symmetric design, I don't think you should put a lot of significance on that difference -- is your muffler stock?

My '87 328 runs fine but always has about 2 twice as much exhaust coming out on the RH passenger side as on the LH drivers side. My mechanic said they all do that... stock ones anyway.

Well I checked the 5-8 cylinder plugs and wires, plug extenders.Checked the extenders with my ohm meter, all are good.Pulled all the plugs three looked good one so so.Looked to be having a little problem with corrosion, cleaned up with some Salcon S-99 Super Silicon spray.Checked the 1-4 bank also to be sure, all looked ok.It looks like I'll be buying a new set of wires, the boots on the ends are cracking some have small splits in them.
