Hi guys, I'm just finishing up a re-do on a house we bought a few months ago and am needing to buy TVs for it. I have been very impressed with the LEDs and LCDs I've seen but the salespeople at Best Buy tell me that they aren't as good as Plasma for watching sports due to slower refresh rates. Apparently this causes a shadowing effect. In my man cave, I of course plan to watch F1 races. Has anyone here noticed anything like this when watching F1 or sports on their LCD or LED TV? Thanks in advance.
I have a plasma in the bedroom that I have watched many F1 races on. The other media room television is an LCD. Unless both are side by side I don't see much of a difference. I would go for the best quality TV in your budget, whether LCD, Plasma, or LED. Some of these things are so cheap now that I view them as disposable. I bought a 42 inch Panasonic Plasma for another bedroom for $400 out the door.
The only area where I see the plasma win a category is watching movies because of the deeper blacks. As far as F1 goes, buy the TV with the fastest hertz speed. The all used to be 60, but now are at least 120 or 240. The faster hertz equal less "drag/shadow" effects when something sudden happens. It's great for sports/action movies too. At first it took some getting used to, but now I prefer it. Good luck with the search and tell us what you end up with.
LED and LCD are both LCD panels, just different backlighting. LED's use LED lights and a standard LCD uses CCFM tubes. LED's are thinner and typically have a brighter picture. The new lineup of Sony LED's are now at 480 and 960htz on the higher end XBR models. I do not get any ghosting on my 240htz LED. My advice would be determining the size of television you wish first, then look at the options in that size that fit your budget. If a 240 htz LED fits your budget then I would recommend over a plasma. If not, then consider a plasma. Given the fact your in the basement, light reflection is not an issue... Which would be the main reason people do not get plasma due to the the glass screen. If you don't have a tight budget then go for the Sony XBR929 model... 960htz. The monolithic bezel-less design is sure to impress!
