When I lift off the throttle, my 308 GTSi returns to idle very slowly.

If I’m cruising and I lift off the accelerator the car doesn’t slow down at all.

What could be causing this? In my simple mind it feels like a weak throttle return spring.

My first guess was that the floor mat was covering the throttle.

    It isn’t that.

Darn...that would have been too easy. That was my culprit.
Good luck and let us know what it is.

Try closing the throttle butterfly at the intake plenum by hand to see if the it is not fully closed. If that does not work, you may have a vacuum leak.

Disconnect the cable from the butterfly, and operate by hand.

If it sticks at all, the problem is in the throttle area. If if doesn't, it's either the cable or the pedal.

Very rare but it does happen when the return spring on the throttle body breaks.
