IF: All is well, and all you need to do is change the timing belts, here is my brief summary of how to set the timing of 4 cams, 2 belts and 1 crank: Tell me if I am wrong:

    1. remove spark plugs, remove flywheel peek-a-boo cover, rotate crank to set flywheel at 1-4 TDC timing mark.

    2. remove cam covers, visually verify 4 cam notches line up with 4 cam bearing cap notches.

    3. clamp cams with wood clamps.

    4. compress belt tensioners, remove old belts, install new belts, release belt tensioners.

    5. visually verify flywheel is still on 1-4 TDC timing mark.

    5. visually verify 4 cam notches line up with 4 cam bearing cap notches, tweak cam pulleys +/- 1 belt cog or so, as required, to perfect aligment.

    6. slowly rotate crankshaft 360 to verify no valves are hitting pistons.

Is this correct ? I just read the WSM and that's how it seems to me.

The guy trying to reassemble his engine had a piston getting cozy with a valve...seems to me the above would be the way to line it up.

    Just some remarks:

    - since the cam cover is open, you should verify valve clearance and adjust if necessary
    - it might be worth to replace the oil seals (for this, either cams or pulleys need to be removed)
    - to "tweak" the timing, the pulleys need to be removed and you have to play the "pin in one of the holes"-game. If you start this, the use of a degree wheel and a dial indicator are essential for proper results. Interesting stuff, but as a beginner, take your time. Start to measure time now by days, not hours. Reminder: You will need a new o-ring and locking washer for each cam pulley.
    - you forgot to tighten the tensioners after rotating :)

    Regards
    Harry
