From a friend on the pantera list:

Sally Leiber town hall meeting. Wasn't Sally Leiber one of the sponsors of the recent smog legislation? I received a flyer in the mail about a public 'town hall' meeting she's going to be having at: Sunnyvale Community Center 500 E. Remington Dr Sunnyvale, CA 2-4pm Saturday Jan 22 Show up and voice your displeasure... -joe -

This is the lady (!) that (along with Arnold) has repealed the 30 year rolling exemption on smog checks. ANYONE near here please go and tell her what we think!!! I cant make it but 10,000 people wrote and caled the gov. to tell him not to sign it but he did, even thpough he has a fleet of Hummers and commute sin a private jet once a week to Sacramento from Westwood! These people have no respect for our rights or the enviroment please attend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the only 250 that does NOT smoke (a lot) !!!!!
Anything under 1975 is safe....for now
It sure is convenient for the politicians to go after the hobby guys who have a weak lobby. The real pollution of course comes from semis and factories, but they have an army of lawyers and lobbyists, so you can't look green on the cheap when running for office.

Exactly right. perhaps we should show up en masse and all smoke it up as much as we can! :D

Sunnyvale is close enough where I'd consider causing a ruckus...

    With functioning emissions equipment..

So? He's wealthy enough to commute in a private jet with or without an entourage when other corporate owners, executives, and government officials need to use First Class once a week. The horror!

Did you ever notice that the smog requirements are less as the vehicle gets older?

Your rights stop when your emissions controls on your vehicles are no longer functioning. How do you propose we check this, take your word for it?

Your vehicles don't need to meet the pollution standards set for modern vehicles but I see no problem with making sure your equipment is functioning. My classic cars had to do it, yours should to.

I not sure where to start.

    1. there was a law in effect which was acceptable to enviromental groups and the car collectores and the previous administration, why change it?

    2. the gov is a hypocrite he says he wants ca. to pollute less and have more efficient cars on the street. He should live in sacracmento if he is really serious about being gov.

    3. many early cars never would have passed the strict ca emmissions that were set up. I have friends with old ferraris which can not pass the strict rules in some areas.

    4. there is some unfairness to the laws here in ventura there is no smog yet we are an enhanced area because our "area" over laps with areas with more smog. Ojai which is 10 miles away has MORE smog yet they are a less enhanced area and do not need to be put on the dyno etc.

    5. we will probably never agree on this but I am enviromentalist and this law will do nothing to clean the enviroment just cost more money for the tax payer and hassle a select "many wealthy" group of individuals.

    6. how about serious mass transit, less tax credits for giant gas guzzling SUV's (now thats a joke) better roads, credits for living near your work.... I could go on for hours.

every car collector in ca did not support this and if you read the senate record the leg. that voted on the issue did not even spend any time studying or show any knowledge of the isssue at all. i was heavily involved in the original law so i feel a personal stake in this whole issue and my car is exempt.

can you say freedom 27 times.........allot of people talk about it but i think we are far less free than we were 10-20 years ago, this is just one small example

It is a good thing that California has culture, good climate, and planty of jobs. Otherwise, the politics of this state would drive me away....government telling me how to wipe, whom to like, and when I can go outside and play, regulating living conditions for cats in shelters while the homeless shoot up in plain sight at SF intersections.

On a bigger scale, I am still happy I left socialism to come here !

    Or consider the alternative:

    "...
    Car ban follows smog alert

    Reuters in Rome
    Monday February 9, 2004
    The Guardian

Cars and lorries were yesterday banned from more than 100 towns and cities in Italy, including Rome and Milan, in an effort to cut pollution.

Partial bans on cars and lorries have been imposed in many areas in recent days, after calm weather allowed smog to build up. But with no improvement in sight, mayors opted for the one-day ban.

"We had no alternative," Walter Veltroni, the mayor of Rome, was quoted as saying. All non-essential traffic was banned from inner Rome from 10am to 5pm yesterday.

However, the Italian environment minister, Altero Matteoli, told Il Messaggero newspaper: "Forcing people to walk once in a while is of little use." He said people should instead be encouraged to scrap their old vehicles and buy less polluting ones.
    ..."

I for one do not mind the intent of the anti-pollution efforts. However, I would like to have a system simular to industrial pollutants where one can trade pollution credits. Lets say I have 2 vehicles: a 30 year old polluting classic and a modern hybrid or an electric car. I would be earning credits with the hybrid and consuming them with the older car. Or maybe I'd just pay $$$ to purchase pollution credits.

A law like this would also take care of another epidemic. Is it now Detroit who holds the title of the most obese city?

Glad to see you "delurked", David. How about lunch today with Johannes, Noon at La Lanterna on 25th in San Mateo? If anybody else is in the area, come on down !

Yes, I came out of the closet ;)
Lunch would be nice, but too late for the 25th (if you mean January). I can make 26 or 28. I know you will be busy on Thursday, polluting the air ( obligatory thread content ). I, unfortunately, am trying to finish things for an alpha product launch :( and cannot take time off.
