I did a search and found all sorts of ways to REMOVE smog equipment, but nothing to install one.

I was talking with a gentleman who has a 1976 308GTS and is trying to sell it. I took it for a spin and seems to be in good shape, handles well for a carb'd 308. In conversation he mentioned that he inherited the car when his dad died, but his dad removed the smog equipment and forgot to plug some of the holes because it makes those chirp noises. On the cam facing closest to the rear, is an exposed part where "something" went, no brackets or mounts, most likely the smog pump. He has no idea about Ferrari's, no idea where the smog components are let alone who to ask and I wasn't entirely sure, but I thought I'd run this past you guys.

He's trying to sell it, but buyers are shying away because they can plainly see that something is missing on the engine, not to mention that chirping noise.

For this year, does he need to reinstall all that smog garbage? or can he just plug them up and fall under the exempt status for smog?

If he does need all that garbage, what sort of compressor and accessories will he need to get it decent shape? My search turned up the '81 Buick Regal smog pump for a 308GT4, but nothing on a 308. He's just trying to sell the thing, not put allot of money into it. Any ideas?

(I'll throw in a Magnum PI line here, "I know what you're thinking" The answer is NO, I'm not trying to buy this car, the last thing I want at this moment is a carb'd 308. Injected QV, yes, but this is no QV. Just tying help by pointing this guy in the right direction for his fcar.)

AFAIK, Anything after 1975 is screwed, courtesy of Ahnuld. That car would need a new air pump, belt, pulley, and all that other crapola. It could cost a few grand...like 5 or 6.

In the alternative, the buyer could try and fit modern aftermarket components on the thing and hope it passes smog next year. Supposedly, these old cars will only have to measure up to the standards of the year they were produced, and it might be more ways than one to pass a '76 308 on mid 1970s emissions standards.

What color and how much does he want for it?

Ah, you are correct, so, that would make it slightly newer than what he stated. So either way now, he is still up a creek so-to-say with a car that he probably cannot sell.

    Not in CA maybe...somewhere else.

I have a 1977 I will be removing all that stuff as not required here any longer.
It consists of TWO belt driven pumps along with a 'thermoreactor' muffler to be complete, along with the air injection tubing into the headers.

Dual R1/R2 point distributors, operated by micro switch off throttle linkage complete the system......

The chirping is an exhaust leak at the plugs or it has been posted here that machining of the plugs is required to avoid this. I have another car that the openings were just welded shut.

You really neeed to nail down the VIN and date before starting down this road.

From what Ferrari uK has posted you could easily spend thou$and$ on this puppy for a CA Smog sticker.

When they ask me about the exposed spinning camshaft end during inspection, I tell 'em it was for the Expresso Grinder Option.......

    That has worked for years.....

He had the smog parts at that time.

If your friend needs to sell the car he needs to either get it to pass smog by having it "tested" at a shop that will pass it. Or, he needs to advertise it on E-bay, ferrariads, FML, etc and note that it has not smog equipment.

The chirp can be fixed by machining a plug to fill in the smog hole on the exhaust from the air pump tubing.

It's NOT worth the cost to have the car fixed to meet CA laws. It will cost him several thousand in parts alone, not to mention someone having to install it all and then TUNE IT to meet smog, which will kill the power on the car.

    Just sell it as it.

Smog fraud is a very serious offense in an EPA 'Smog County' such as Harris County, Texas or in the great state of California.

It could lead to a twenty year game of rock hockey, in the big arena.......LOL!

My understanding is it would not be the Owner who was liable, as much as the mechanic who made the mods........the car's VIN once registered as an Offender here, is tracked from cradle to grave.........

    BigTex,

Our cars are exempt in Harris county (25yrs I think is the time limit) and each year the next year car is exempt. So, 1979 308's are exempt in Harris county. Next year, the 1980 cars will be exempt and not tested.

By the way, tell your buddy I've still got his air filters and if he doesn't want me to sell them as Ferrari parts on E-bay for 3x what I paid for them he needs to come get them.

In fact, I'm cutting out early today to go for a little drive, but I'm not coming South on 290 b/c that is the WRONG way if I want to have fun and not sit in traffic on Friday afternoons. Why don't you wonder out my way this afternoon and we could go for a drive.
