The past few weeks I noticed some backfires while sitting at traffic lights or low RPM. After installing a more "open" exhaust last week the "popping" was even more obvious. I figured it was either the spark plug extenders or inside the distributors. This morning I pulled the two distributor caps for inspection. The contacts had buildup inside the caps but nothing major. The rotor cap blade had a moderate amount so everything was cleaned with sandpaper, fingernail file and a good spray of contact cleaner. After putting everything back together it runs very smooooooooooth with no backfires or poping at low RPM. If you are experianceing similar with your car this may work for you. Its about a 1 hour job. Joe

I luv fixing things like that instead of just replacing parts :) ... I luv finding the actual physical cause of a problem even though sometimes it takes 10 times longer LOL.

    cheers

    Joe,
that sounds about what I'm having. Can a neophyte do the job or is this for a mechanic? I replaced my fuse blocks per birdman last year- I was proud i was able to do it myself....

This is a do-it-yourself job and takes about an hour. Pull the rubber covers back off the dist. caps. There are three 8mm bolts that hold the dist caps on. Just loosten the bolts and pull the caps back where you can see inside. Use some sand paper or a fingernail file to clean the 4 contacts in each cap. You'll see a flat side on each of the contacts to clean. Then clean the rotor contact which is a blade about 1/2" long. You don't have to remove the rotor to do clean it. Once everything is clean, re-assemble. Its kind of tough on your back because of the bending over but I was finished in about an hour. Joe
