I think some thing broke in the drive chain and snaped the belt rather than the belt snaping and doing the damage . Whats the likely damage parts wise ?

This is really heartbreaking! Sorry to hear this. If you caught it quickly, the damage *could* be minimal, however, the likely scenario is that a piston or more met a valve. Could be anything from a dented piston crown, to a bent/broken valve to a scored liner. Take a look at this thread to see what you're in for rebuild wise: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227178

    Keep us posted.

You can short block to a new rebuilt motor for 12K exchange......so that's the upper end!

Maybe just some nicked piston crowns and a new head retro fit is all you need....look at at he bright side, no more sodium valves!

It may have been one of them that snapped, and jammed up the valvetrain???

It has got to be some thing like that, the valve train jammed and caused the belt to break. I can see where the tooth on the cam dugi nto the belt as it seazed. O well engine rebuild to fast road spec on the way

Ugh, I'm sick FOR you on that; very disheartening, but you've got a good attitude and even better advice on this board. I'm a sympathizer, wishing you a speedy solution. It'll be better than ever.

The biggest PITA is probably to get the engine out. But from what I have seen on my engine which was just completely rebuilt its not that bad. Once you got it out you take it apart bring it to a excellent machine shop and have him put in some new pistons and new valves. You can get the valves, gaskets etc at GT carparts for pretty cheap. In case you still have stock pistons and you would like to just replace some of them I have 8 in very good condition stock pistons.
If its the rear bank you might not even have to pull the engine. Labor of Love....

    Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear about the damage, gutwrenching feeling I know.

I've just finshed rebuilding my 308 after a piece of brass fell out of my carb sync tool into #2 cyl.

Are you sure nothing fell down into the cam belts after the work was done on the car?

I had a very near miss just after my rebuild when one of the nuts that holds the air cleaner cover on fell off.

The nut fell down and landed on the idler pully for the air-con compressor and was then launched into the engine bay cover leaving a small dent.

Bugger! What a thing to have happen. Hopefully not too serious, the fact the engine was at low RPM should help. Can I mention a four letter F word here? OK, Ford! I had a belt go whilst stationary at some lights a few years ago, just went, no warning etc. No damage either so all crossed from here, let us know! and of course Good Luck :)

Got up this morning and started the strip dowm. Cam covers off and can see no damage, carbs off and all the inlet valves are intact. Spark plugs out and no holed pistons. I maybe a very lucky person.

Compeshion good on all cylinders and the belt breakage was caused by a jubile clip some how finding its way in to the cam covers. The new belts are on and the build up begins.

So the belt is actually broken? And there is no valve or piston damage? What is a jubile clip? Any pictures?

Shes up and running again, lucky or what ?. Still a few jobs to do, I replaced the vacum hose to the servo with silicon hose and it just dose not have enougth strenth in it. Going to replace with rubber hopefully with out taking the fuel tank out again. Just leaves the carbs to balance and it will be back on the road.

Does England have a Lottery? If you broke a belt with the engine running and didnt bend valves or otherwise mash anything up, it may very well be the first Ferrari in history to pull it off. Absolutely amazing. I doubt anyone would have believed it possible had the question been posed to its possibility.

I spoke to Ron at Superformance before I started to strip it down . I asked the chances of it having big damage and was told that they dont always smash when a belt brakes. Lucky it was ticking over a bit on the slow side (around 5-600 rpm) as i had just rebuilt the carbs and had not set them up. I will post some pics tommorow of the hose clamp (jubile clip) and the belt and the nick in the bottom pully were the clip broke the belt.
