One of the biggest mistakes I made I ever made was selling my 1994 512TR (I sold it 2014). For the past 8+ years I have been on the hunt for a 1994 (upgraded diff) black-on-tan or grey-on-tan; they are crazy rare I know.

However, I added an additional hurdle in that the one thing that really drove me nuts about my 94 TR was the mouse seatbelts - so my goal was to find a 94 Euro black-on-tan or grey-on-tan.

Over 8 years or so years I only found one 1994 black on tan (euro) that traded on BAT in 2022 and I was the runner up bidder. Recently I spoke with the winner of that auction to try to buy the car (great guy) but he wanted more for the car than I was comfortable (I get it and totally respect his view)

My dream color combo was a 512M Canni di Fucile-on-tan that sold at Sotheby’s for $700k. Candidly though I am not fond of the M’s styling. I have found only one TR in Canni di Fucile ever……in France.

After searching with no success for a ’94 euro I started thinking about getting a non-94 and upgrading the diff as part of a major service. That’s when I discovered that not all 1993 512TRs are created equal. Some of the 1993’s have the upgraded diff (gearbox #>1370). I had been looking exclusively at 94’s. Most 93’s don’t have the forged diff however beginning on-or-about the November1992 production date Ferrari started the forged diff. The car I am purchasing has a gearbox #1457 and engine #33523 so it Is the forged diff with the upgraded shaft but DOES NOT have the heavier bolts and housing. It does have gearbox casing #124859 which has many updated specs (but not all of them).

The 1993 512TR I am buying has a tan interior, but the exterior is rossa. Now this is where I am going to get crucified. First let me share:

    1) This is a euro version (they usually trade for less than the US version which makes no sense to me given the mouse seat belts)

    2) It spent time in Japan which may have some negative reputation given some lax regulations

    3) It has a weak documented service history

    4) The previous owner had the exterior resprayed with questionable results

    5) It’s a euro version and Carfax messed up the Kilometer-to-miles reports so it has a ”discrepancy” in miles reported.

    6) When I had my previous Ferrari, I was a driver of them, not a collector

So, with all those caveats, I am having the car exterior paint stripped and repainted Canni di Fucile.

When done the car will (a) be Canni di Fucile-on-tan (b) has forged diff (c) relative low miles for a driver’s car - 27k mile (d) new tires (e) a major (f) new bushings (g) reconditioned leather interior (h) recent brake flush and (i) reconditioned headlights

This is the BAT link to the car when it was for sale on BAT, however, I did not purchase it from BAT, I purchased it from West Coast Dream Machines who purchased it about a year ago.

I will share photos of the process as the car gets painted and has its major.

I am SO happy to be a classic Ferrari owner again.

Exciting, welcome Lewis. Great choice for a base to make into YOUR car.

I adore my 512TR so I share your passion and love your willingness to experiment.

I would also recommend a fresh of some of the weakpoints on the car if not already addressed:
    1) Upgrade fusepanel/box
    2) Rebuild fuel system to remove the rubber parts that dissolve in ethanol blend gasoline

That car is already a euro spec so it doesnt need the Euro timing tweak.

Your recommendations are spot on - literally my Guido upgraded fuse panel arrived in the mail today. I wasn't sure how long Guido was going to keep making these so I wanted to get one while they are still available. I will be installing it next year sometime.

Agreed on fuel system. On both my 328 and previous 512TR, i had them redo the fuel systems for exactly that reason. That will be part of the major service that starts next week.

After the major service and repaint, i will be installing the Guido fuse box and a new head unit (i need backup and front camera as I am getting old) so thinking of installing this unit. I read in some of the modern F-car forums on Fchat and folks have had decent luck with this unit. It will be covered by the head unit flip cover in my TR so it won't look too out of place

Audio: I had a similar thought early (have a spare OEM BE6112 on my desk) but honestly I have never turned on my radio once in the now 6 years I owned the car. As such I left it with the period Alpine unit currently mounted. I still may pull it and swap in the BE6112 but time will tell.

Exhaust: Euro cars (mostly) have pre-cat deletes so you don't need pre-cat bypasses. If they do still have the pre-cats, I strongly suggest having them removed. My car only runs the main cats (ie I have a tubi SS pre-cat delete on my US spec car). As far as mufflers are concerned, the OEM muffler/silencer is very heavy and very very quiet. My favorite exhausts are Tubi (quieter, heavier but still better in both respects than the factory box) and Capristo Stage 3 (louder, lighter than both). I actually will be selling my stage 3 capristo soon. For that matter, I have several spare sets of OEM cats. Perhaps I have a hoarding problem…
