A buddy and I split the cost of this cheap Porsche and plan on building it up as a track car. It's a 1979 Porsche Euro 928 with a 1969 Small Block Chevy. It's either a Porsche 928 SBC or a Porschevy. It was bought as is, with a motor that runs. It was built up over the past 8 years - attempting to become a drag car. We will turn it into an autocross/rallycross/LeMons/ChumpCar/track day car.

We also have it registered at the moment with an antique plate. Very inexpensive, no need to get it inspected. Restricted driving (to/from events, shops, etc.), but neither one of us plan to daily drive this thing anyway.

    There is a to-do list:
    - Fix clutch (it runs fine, but it will either run in gear or run out of gear. suspect clutch bleeding issue because hoses aren't connected from the master cyl.)
    - Have a custom, not so obnoxiously loud, exhaust built up (flowmasters, and pipe to replace the 3" pipes that exit behind the front wheels)
    - Remove cage and build a proper one. (it's a serious red neck cage with too many bends, plates aren't large enough, etc.)
    - Proper Driver and passenger seats with proper 5 or 6 point harnesses (will buy used, so if you have a pair of fixed racing seats, drop me a line!)
    - Tires... oh those Hoosiers gotta go. We'll run something like RS3's because they are LeMons legal and not a bad DOT track tire. I have several sets of S2000 wheels, and with the same bolt pattern and general offset, they'll work until we have some CCW's or something similar obtained to fit.
    - battery replacement and relocating the shut off switch next to the driver with one that works (which is currently under the left rear bumper!)
    - fix holes in firewall under gas pedal and weld something up in the back to mount the plates on - they were previously cut off.
    - lots of various little things to do, but not too far from being track worthy.

Porsche purists, are you offended? Or are you relieved, like some who look down on the 928 and say to us, "oh, so you removed the bad part."

Original Porsche transmission. It was rebuilt about two years ago, but hasn't seen a mile on the road since.

What I really want to know is...

Is that your custom Yellow Renault Dauphine SS Turbo GT XGS in your header?

It isn't mine, but that's me driving it in the picture. It was built by a guy in Dallas with the initials B.H. Another Fchat member or two has also driven it during LeMons/Chump Car races. The shell is a real Dauphine, but the frame is home built and powered by a Mercury Sable engine in the rear.

I think its fracking awesome. There used to be two here in my area that had freaking supercharged chevy 350's sticking out of the hoods. Not sure where they ended up, but they were different, and cool! I dont see the reason to butcher an original old 928, but there is nothing wrong with recycling a car into something else its its already too far gone! :)

ps: how do you insure one of those! ?

A cowl hood would be nice!

    S2k wheels fit the 928? I thought S2k was 5x114 and the 928 is 5x130.

Those are Porsche 'Phone Dials' (named from the old rotary dial phones)... were stock on many 928's. They are 5x130.

    S2k = Honda???? Didn't see any S2000 wheels...

I told my insurance lady about the car. We'll get basic insurance eventually. I don't think it should be a problem for liability only/bare minimum, esp since it will be insured as my third car and having antique plates on it.

Ahhh, my mistake. I looked it up and thought the 928's were 5x114s. I just have three sets sitting in my garage.

The best thing about that Porvette is the emblem on the hood. Nice work!

..for the record, I'm the other co-owner.

I recommend a minimum of $2,000,000 uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on any car or motorcycle that will ever be driven on the street.

Ha! Yeah. I figured why not? When 400HP is not enough in a 2600 lb car - add boost.

Is that really the best part!?! Damn... That coming from a 928 guy... Can I borrow your Hoosiers? :)

No worries. Uninsured is req here in Texas. I would say most accidents around here seem to be involved in uninsured motorists. Doesn't make sense much. They usually don't even own the car either. Oh the stories I could tell. :/

    You can buy them! :D

Seriously, I used to own a C6 Corvette and I'm just a fan of all things automotive. But it's always the little details that make a project, and not only does the combined logos look nice, you also took the time and effort to have it look professional. It's one of those small things that you didn't have to do and could have been done terrible -- but it wasn't.

What is the amount of UM required in Texas? It is imperative that you have enough to cover you and your family for serious injuries, disability and/or death caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

Just received the insurance quote. $184/yr. from Hagerty. Zero deductible. Premium Plus plan.

What are the liability and UM limits for that premium amount?

Makes little sense to ask that...

Why don't you just go to:

    Hagerty.com

    and find out for yourself.

All sorts of things, like location, age, car, etc. make a fair difference in the premium.

    Do it.

I have Hagerty on my BB512i as well as several vintage motorcycles I own. And, I do know that Hagerty does not offer enough UM coverage for owners that have moderate to high assets. Thats why it is imperative to also have an umbrella policy with at least $2mil in liability and UM coverage.
