So last night, I pick up a good friend of mine, Ed, who happens to be African-American, to go and have some Mexican food here in Las Vegas, on West Sahara, over by Summerlin. We have several baskets of chips w/ salsa, chicken fajitas, and a couple margaritas while watching the Heat/Pistons game. From there, we head off to Ed's buddy's house, in North Las Vegas, and I had never been there before. Now, I had only 2 margaritas, and was no where near intoxicated, and perfectly fine to drive.

I exit the freeway, listening to Ed who is receiving directions to the house over a cell phone. We approach a street in the right lane and find out we need to turn left there, so I cut over and just make it through a yellow light. Immediately, I am pulled over by not 1, but 2 police cars.

Now, I am 20, and I drive a black C5 Corvette convertible, so whenever I am pulled over, the first question is always, "Who's car is this?" When the overweight cop gets to my window he asks that, then to my surprise, his second question is "Have you ever been arrested before?" Now, apart from a few speeding tickets, I have never been in any serious trouble. He shines the flashlight at my friend Ed, then asks for both our I.D.'s. Then he goes on to ask if there are any drugs or open alcohol containers in the car. Then walks back to the other cops and we sit there for 15 minutes not knowing what is going on.

Finally, he comes back and says he is going to cut me some breaks, and he gives me a speeding ticket for 58 in a 45, a warning for not using a turn signal, and a warning for not having a Nevada DL after living there for more than 30 days, (all my stuff is registered in CA). Then he asks me to get out of the car and sign the ticket on the hood of his car. I do, as the 3 other cops are standing there watching me. They ask again if I had anything to drink to which I respond "I'm only 20, and they don't let me drink yet" (I've got a good fake I.D.) I sign it, and we were on our way.

Talking about it with my buddy Ed, at first I felt lucky that I didn't get a DUI, then we decided that I wasn't even speeding. If anything we were driving slower than the speed limit, and my only crime was cutting over 3 lanes without a turn signal only because we didn't know where we were going. Also, I have never been asked of having drugs or being arrested before, but my buddy said that was just because I had a black guy in the car. The other thing was, why did they ask for his I.D? Can they even do that? Anyway, my point is, the whole thing was very strange compared to other speeding tickets I've gotten. The whole process took almost a half an hour, and the cops just seemed to be f***ing with a kid in a Corvette.

    Consider yourself lucky.......

Crossing 3 lanes quickly could be considered reckless driving. Take the speeding ticket and go to court.

Also, I'm not going to judge you for drinking at 20, but don't drink and drive.

FYI - When I've gotten pulled over the officers ask the probing questions to me also. So "any drugs?", etc. is not reserved for vettes or minorities.

You're lucky SOB for not getting a DUI. Pay the fine and be happy.

Well your buddy is just sorta full of ****; every single time I have ever been pulled over I have been asked if I was arrested, if I had been drinking and if there are any drugs or weapons in the car. The answer to all these questions is either no or the truth; whichever doesn't damage you.

Yes they can ask for his ID. You are lucky for not getting a DUI or having to do a blow test.

However, I'd still say fight it. Who cares if you're guilty, you can still potentially get off. And there is no reason to help them in their revenue generation.

I think my buddy was joking............ but still, I have never been asked that by a cop when I was pulled over. I'm a pretty innocent looking guy. :)

    Another success story.....

Yea....I'm never been pulled over but others I know were asked the same question regardless of race or age. Also can depend where you live and history of the area. It could be a routine question.

As for the officer checking his I.D though, I never heard of that one....just the driver's should be been appropriate.

Funny how an officer asks if you have drugs......

I'd change my shorts and consider myself luck that they didn't make you take a PBT on the scene. At 20 you can be arrested for DUI at as little as .01%. Pay the ticket or fight it in court, but I would be kissing the officer's a$$ for not smelling the tequila on your breath.

You're a p****! Fake ID, dinking and driving, swerving across three lanes of traffic, no signal. Are you nuts! You're very lucky! And you should have made the proper turn for the lane you were in and turned around in the next parkinh lot!

    Give me a break kid.

Don't call me kid, you are only 3 years older than me (I'll be 21 next month); and you live in Canada where you've been drinking since 18 anyway. When I was 19, I spent a whole year living in Europe where I could drink legally. I am not the typical American kid that goes out to play beer pong and get as wasted as possible... I am past that, and I can enjoy a casual drink or a nice glass of wine. I know my limits, and I handle it with more maturity than a lot of older adults I know. I was lost and I would have gone to make that turn any other time, I could see the road clear. The cops were jealous of the Corvette and itching get me, if I showed any signs of being intoxicated they would have arrested me on the spot.

First of all were you under age and drinking?
Second did you cross 3 lanes when you should not have?
Did you have a fake ID?
Just because it's legal for me to drink at 18, does that mean you can in your country?
Did you show poor judgement on that night several times?
Does the law care if you think you know your limits?

You're not as grown up as you want to appear. You're young, learn from this and if you don't make those mistakes again, you won't have another post like this one ever.

    ^Seriously...

Were you looking for sympathy here? What did you expect to hear from us? Your 'good fake ID' lets you drink and then go driving? You cross over 3 lanes without signaling, get pulled over, tell the officer you hadn't been drinking, and then get away with only a ticket. Welcome to life- you easily could have gotten a DUI and had 'your' 'Vette towed.

And if the cops were itching to get you, they would have, instead of letting you go with 30 warnings, dumbass. And just because you are allowed to drink is a dumbass reason for drinking. Yeah you're as mature as any 21 year old I ever knew. And as for me, I may not hold my mouth closed as often as I should and I've made mistakes but I'm a lot more mature than you and your "story" above.

That's an absurd statement. Your C5 Vette is probobly worth less than the car's they drive. And why would you assume that they would automatically be jealous? Do you know what they drive? Maybe that cop has a cherry '57 Vette in his garage or a brand new C6 Z06. I wonder how many of the guys on here get pulled over and "harrassed" because they drive $200,000 Italian masterpieces? I'm gonna guess not too many and not too often. You screwed up, broke the law, and were d@mn lucky to just get stuck with your simple speeding ticket. Stop trying to make it sound like the cops are below you and were just out to get you.

This is what they refer to as profiling. They selected you because you guys looked like a good target. Things are different now(post 911 stuff) plus there's pressure to write more tickets to collect revenues. You played it perfectly, so consider yourself lucky. Next time be extra careful or they'll be roughing you up and you'll really regret it.

You (original poster) make it sound like you're above 99% of the world because you have a Corvette. There are tons of people with nice cars out there. Go to a high school in a nice neighborhood and you'll see a sea of BMW's, Lexus', MB's, Porsches and yes Corvettes. I bought my Corvette when I was 17 - actually paid for it myself and it was used but only 2 years old. I got pulled over often too and I thought it was because the cops were out to get me and "jealous" of me. I bought myself my Viper for my 21st birthday and surprisingly I never got pulled over. Not because they stopped being jealous but because I had grown up. I also realized that "nice cars" are nothing special. Some rich guys drive around in old Hondas, and some folks driving around in their new M5 are financed beyond belief and a missed paycheck would bring it all down. So, no, a cop is not impressed or jealous by your car and/or age. Being underage and having ANY alcohol is against the law and IMO you should be kissing that cops butt that he didn't haul you in. You got off light and your immaturity oozes from your post.

    Just my .02.

I think you should fight the tickets, solely based on the fact that the government has turned law enforcement into a bunch of revenue agents... I also think you should never start a thread like this again...

There are plenty of people here - PLENTY - who will go out, have a drink or two with dinner - and then get in the car and drive somewhere else or go home. So if you really were fit to drive, then it's no big deal if you're not drunk; thousands of people do it everyday.

But when you lump it all together - the bragging on the fake license, the feeling singled out because you're young in a 'Vette, the under age drinking (no matter where you've lived) - it all makes this thread seem like you've got a persecution complex and you're giving it some exercise...

I've already got the Vegas ticket-fixer lawyer on the job. I started this thread just to share my experience because it did freak me out... even though I maintain I was not drunk, I still will be more careful in the future and I did learn a lesson. However, to the persecution complex, I don't think it is unrealistic for me to think I was singled out a little. North Las Vegas is a real slum of an area, and even though I know a Corvette is no Ferrari, I clearly remember less eye catching cars driving faster than me while I was looking for my turn while the cop was apparently pacing me. Also, the cops probing questions were new to me, and it was the first time I experienced the badge-heavy attitude that has been discussed in other threads. To the guys that are all jumping on me, I appreciate your concern but I already have good parents. Everyone should take this as a warning to be safe and smart out there, not a chance throw stones... peace guys :)

Profiling is when a person is stopped by police for no initial reason beyond their appearance, (or when a technicality, such as a low tire or dim license-plate light is the basis of an exploratory stop and search) often because they fit a stereotypical 'profile' such as perceived skin color, class, or sexual orientation. Whether or not a person is later discovered to have an outstanding warrant, something illegal in their car, or etc., the initial stop, based on profiled assumptions, is clearly discriminatory.
    Violation #1
Cutting across 3 lanes is an automatic violation.

.02 can be a dosage of NyQuil. Consider yourself very lucky.
