i'm going up this morning to put the money down on a lovely 246 gt in CT...thanks to everyone who gave me so much good advice (jim and tom, to name a few)

i had bill pollard give the car the once over, and he said he likes it-it needs some things (shocks, new hoses, etc), but overall, a good solid car...SO...the question is, do i buy it and take it over to bill's joint to get fixed up, or have the place i'm buying it at do the work...they're called automotive restorations in CT..they're slightly cheaper than bill, but he comes v highly recommended....it would be easier of course to have automotive restorations do the work...

    any thoughts?

    V excited for this morning...

Bill did the PPI, he did the hard part.

I'd give him the work too.

Just my $.02, not based on reputation, just on equitable treatment.

Phil- have Bill do it. He did the heads on my dino & is a real pro. He wont work on Ferrari's later than the 328 as he considers any of the uni-body ones (the ones after the 328) to be junk. He made the comment that the oval chasis tubes is what gave Ferrari an advantage in racing. He used to be a judge in the Concours scene. He used to work for Nick Soprano(classic & competition) in White Plains etc and has been doing this for 25 years. He is a pro...go with him . Automotive Resto does great work but Bill is Dino - centric and this is all he does. I had to wait a long time just to get him to do my heads...he is the real deal and worth it. You will get an education. Go with him trust me on this

Phil - Tom's input is sound. The only question I have is whether you might drive it for a few months first? Is there an immediate need to do the work? Why not enjoy the car for the summer, make a list of things that you identify while enjoying it, and then take it in for the work during the winter?

Hate to see you dampen your excitement. We are creatures desiring instant gratification.

jim, that would be an excellent point, if i knew ANYTHING about the mechanics of cars, other than when they stop working....:)

here's a pic of the car...i was terrified when i took it out for a spin...it's going to take some getting used to...

bill's suggestions were mostly things to bulletproof the car a little-replace hoses, etc...

Jim- I just sent this to Phil on email before I saw your comment!!

You know...before you just send it off to be fixed or whatever it is always a good idea to drive it a while. The things that will hit you after you have driven it a few 100 miles (or a thousand) can be quite different than a mechanic opines on after a PPI. If you feel comfortable (you will have to get out of your comfort zone & drive it) driving it you will be much more informed on it before you give it to Bill. As I said if you can do it..bring it up here and compare it to mine. You can drive mine & drive yours. You can then see whatever the differences are. We can put mine on the rack ( I have two racks in my garage) look at it & then put yours up. I can help you make a check list. I have seen people buy a new car , never drive it (much) have stuff done to it that had they driven the car they would have done differently. I have done this myself. As I said in the beginning there is a huge amount of support around for these cars. They are not hard to fix and if you are careful you can operate one inexpensively. They are not difficult cars. Please let me know your schedule & we can put something together. This week is better than next. Do the wire transfer thing & the funds will clear by 3 pm on monday & you are free. Great purchase- it looks like a great car!! Congrats!!

    very nice !!!

Is Blue Scuro 20-A-357 is original colour of #01704?

For me a 246 GT M-serie car is the most pleasure to drive of all series.
    ;-)

    Congratulations

    Phil,
    Welcome to the fellowship!

If there are any safety-related items (from what you said about Bill's impresson, there are likely none), have them addressed immediately. Any could-leave-you-stranded issues should probably be resolved, too. The rest: Table 'em until winter, as previously suggested.

That being said, DRIVE IT. Shine the car, show the car, share the car. Then, DRIVE IT some more. It's way too much fun to have it laid up during The Season!!!

More pictures ('know a photog?) of your lovely Dino would be enjoyed by all!

    Congrats,
    Coop
