This proves that if ferrari entered lmp1 they would win It happened today? 25 September » Ferrari Magazine - For Ferrari cars owners and fans This is sweeter than beating soft drink companies in f1. Ferrari is the absolute n1 amongst car racing AND building factories. And if someone cites audi I'll throw up!
I'm not sure how that "proves" anything, but damn I hope Ferrari is building a P1 car. it would be great for sports car racing, especially the Porsche vs Ferrari angle.
I applaud your optimism, but the 458 right now is not the dominant car and I guess that the development of a GT car is peanuts compared to the cost of a prototype program.
I fail to see how winning the GT championship in 2011 proves Ferrari is building a P1 car to take on Audi and Porsche now. There has not been an official announcement or anything in this regard from Maranello or any of the chassis builders such as Dallara or Michelotto to claim Ferrari is entering P1 Checking the current WEC GT standings, Ferrari is in broiled in a very close championship with Aston Martin and Porsche. They had a very good 2-3 result at COTA on Sunday but could not match the pace of the winning Aston Martin. As stated previously when this subject inevitably comes up each year, it is summarily struck down. As Mr. Risi told media members at a reception in the paddock at Sebring, the 458 GTs are virtually prototypes themselves. To get into the P1 game now against the likes of the Audi jaggernaught and the challenge from Porsche (which never gets involved in any type of top tier racing without having a decided advantage in the rules) and Toyota next year, another F-1 type budget would need to be sourced and work would have to be well under way. The Porsche P1 car will be plenty trick, guarantee that. It is rumored that the car is a four cylinder with massive turbos, hybrid and it must be suspected that Porsche has something else up it's sleeve since they've hired away several top F-1 engineers. Porsche fans will have plenty to cheer about next year. BHW
Audi has a deathgrip on LMP1 for the foreseeable future IMO. Porsche will give them a good run for their money, but Audi has been proving themselves for the last 13 years. I would love to see Ferrari get involved purely for the competition, but I doubt they will. The GT cars are nowhere near the LMP cars in terms of R&D.
Still, all things and championships considered, Ferrari is the most successfull racing brand and what I wanted to point out is that af corse beat factory Porsches which proves that they could do the same in the major class, especially with a full factory effort. Porsche are indeed rumoured to be using a 4 pot after sporting iirc the exhausts just on the left side of the car. Domenicali said that the new f1 engine is suitable to lmp1 which cuts most of the costs out and could benefit both championships in terms of development. If the same engine could be used in both f1 and Lm is just matter of time until some f1 team enters lmp1 and Ferrari are at the front of the cue. They could invest all the money others are spending on engines alone to the chassis. Now I just hope the LaF beats 918 at the ring.
you think Ferrari is a more successful racing brand than Porsche? maybe the most successful f-1 racing brand.
While I do not have the figures, my guess is Porsche is the winningest brand in sports car racing. If Ferrari enters lmp1, they will handily be trounced by Audi and Porsche.
Keeping in mind Aston Martin made the jump from GT where they've proven successful to P1 with several iterations of "petrol" prototypes and had it handed to them by the Audi diesels. So, with that recent history in mind, success in GT doesn't necessarily translate to success in P1. Since Dave Richards has concentrated Aston Martin's efforts back in GT, they've regained their footing and are very competitive again. Correct that Porsche does sit atop the record books in sports car racing with wins at Le Mans and Sebring over Ferrari (but only just). But, since Ferrari hasn't entered a full factory sports car program since 1972, the field was open for Porsche to go on a run from then until the late 80's over the Group 6, Group 5, GTX, Group C and GTP eras. Ferrari's only other entry into sports car racing was from the mid-90s with privately entered 333-SPs which had success at Daytona and Sebring but never came close at Le Mans. At the time, it was thought the only way they could win Le Mans with a 333-SP was with a full factory effort which never came. It's great to speculate on how Ferrari would do against the current competition in P1 but for the foreseeable future, it isn't likely to happen. And, who knows, if F-1 implodes like many of the experts seem to think it will, perhaps we'll see Ferrari move to sports cars. BHW
Maybe and even that is arguable because a victory in f1 counts 10 times as much as one in Lm gt pro, but I am talking of this current year where internationally Ferrari is the brand doing best, all categories of car racing included. Porsche doesn't even come close. Mercedes is probably second and Mclaren and Audi about third I would say.
Conversely, one might say a victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans is worth four Grands Prix victories such is the world wide attention on the event itself. The difference being one is the most important race in the world and the other is the most important championship. BHW
You mean "had" a deathgrip on LMP1. 2014 Porsche returns. And with it the bar gets reset again. To quote a famous line......"Porsche......There is no substitute".
With 16 Le Mans victories and numerous championships, Porsche is without doubt the most successful sport cars company. Porsche won with factory and private teams, in Europe and the USA, often against strong opposition. From next year, it may even improve on that achievement. With 12 Le Mans wins, AUDI comes second. Most AUDI have been factory wins against little opposition, benefiting from the huge advantage granted to diesels by the ACO. Ferrari is a long way behind with only 9 Le Mans victories. When was the last time a Ferrari won a major sport car race?
Yes but my point is that if you consider all forms of car racing at this moment in time, Ferrari being second in F1 and there or thereabouts in Le Mans GT is better than any other brand is doing in 2013.

Just wait for Porsche to come back in LMP1! BTW, Porsche won the GT category at Le Mans this year again! That doesn't count? Many people consider F1 completely irrelevant in car racing; most teams are specialised engineering companies with no car production. Isn't the WCC a soft drink company?
Without discounting efforts from either marque, you really have to skew the facts to state that Ferrari is more successful than Porsche....period...
