well, more accurately, i had to pull it off, since it was literally hanging by a thread... just wondering, would it be easy to weld/re-attach, or do i have to buy a new one.. it's the euro model, the cone version.. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Post a picture of the mounting point on the body. Might be best to replace with the correct mirror assuming the body will allow it. DM
Phil - your Talbot style mirror was rather common during the late 1960s and early 70s, and many Dinos that I have seen had these "upscale" mirrors installed as a dealer option/courtesy. Thus, some might suggest, as I will, that either mirror is acceptable. Jim S.
Certainly not a matter of opinion from a concours standpoint. It'll cost you points as it's not factory original, at least not as far as I know. I don't think it enhances the appearance of the car. The bullet style mirrors are more suited for hanging on the fenders of an LBC. But that's a matter of opinion. DM
believe me, my dino will NEVER win any concours!..it's for driving, not for showing.. i've always considered myself upscale, being english and all... what's an LBC, anyway?
U.S. spec cars might all have been delivered with mirrors, in which case you could make an argument about "factory original". Euro cars, as far as I know, were delivered without any exterior mirrors (ours certainly was), so any contemporary aftermarket mirror should be considered to be "correct". Personally, I don't think that the alleged "correct" stubby-style mirror does anything to enhance the appearance of the car. Again, just another opinion.
Dave - my first Dino,- a pre-U.S. 1972 (often incorrectly referred to as a "Euro" manufactured late 1971), which I purchased in 1978 - came with a driver Talbot mirror. I was the 2nd owner and the first owner had not painted or modified the car. The mirror was on the car when he purchased it from the dealer. I suspect that the dealer installed it. I am not claiming to know what the factory supplied, merely my experience. Jim S.
Jim, we all know the dealers did all kinds of stuff to these to make 'e sell. Headlight covers, Ferrari Badges, mirrors. Hell, the dealer PAINTED mine in order to get it to sell. Still, I think we all pretty much agree that the bullet style mirror did not get installed at the factory, and that's the tale of the tape when it comes to concours. Although, one could argue that since safety modifications are permitted, that perhaps a mirror would fall into that category. DM
ok, so, for those of you still interested, here's the offending item, plus the mirror mount on my concours-horrifying car... any idea of how to re-attach? glue? welding? chewing gum? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks to me like you're gonna have to pull the inside door panel off and see if you can get to the base of the mirror from there to detach it. Replacement? go whichever way makes you happy!!! If you want the bullet style, get it from Moss Motors. http://mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=37329&SortOrder=49#42 last item on the page. Want stock? All the various Dino parts guys have repros for that. And the bullet style does appear to bolt up from underneath, which may be a little bit of a challenge. Or, chewing gum. DM
Phil- if you pull the door panel you can fix the lock too. Maybe you should wait until the weather gets lousy & do it then. Make a list of stuff...
hi tom! lock is fixed...so this is the only thing to fix (until the next thing) what do you reckon? standard issue mirrors, or stick with the bullets?
In most cases (except apparently US-bound cars), NO MIRRORS were installed at the factory. It seems to me that a judge would have to take this fact into account when judging a "Euro" car such as Phil's. By the way, Phil, if I were you I would stick with the Talbot.
I would GUESS that an exterior mirror was a factory option, in as much as the later US cars had them. If that's the case (and if any of our Dino brothers has a factory order form or slip/receipt we can confirm) I would also suggest that only one type of mirror was available from the factory as an option, the one that was later affixed to US cars. That being the case, if we're gonna beat this poor old horse to death, the correct mirror for concours would be the factory style mirror, not the Talbot bullet style mirror. Again, this is an educated guess. I'll check with the knower of all things concours next time I see him. DM
According to Matthias Urban, who runs the Dino Directory, non-US market cars had no external mirrors, and no factory options for it either. That makes any outside mirror a dealer or owner installed option on the non-US cars. Interesting... HEY TOM SHAUGHNESSY, what's the rules on concours for this? If the non-US car has an outside mirror, it's not factory no matter what. That means it was installed as a safety feature. What's that do on the scorer's sheet? DM
Here's some pictures of mirrored Dino's at the factory...note the Chromodora Astro mirror.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
very interesting... I know only pictures from the factory or from fares (Ferrari year book 1968-70) without side mirrors. Maybe at a later stage of production side mirrors have been fitted?! Or just for cars directy picked up at the factory by the client. Or dealer ordered the side mirrors. Different countries in Europe had different side mirror fitted. ;-) Regards Matthias
Hey Phil, Me thinks you are holding a Talbot Berlin 300 Senior. If yours has four inch diameter glass, that's it. If three-point-five, it's a Junior. The Moss offering is likely a nice repro of the Junior, sans the logo. Should you decide to replace that gem with the real-deal, check out aardvark international. I just spoke to them; they're still around & they stock Talbot, plus Fiamm, Vitaloni and Cibie products. http://www.talbotco.com/index.htm 'trust this helps. Cheers, Coop 'just to stir the pot ..., Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dan, Are those Vitaloni Sebrings on your fabulous car? That has to be a totally unique arrangement, too! The whole thing works with the Verde Germoglio. 'love it! Coop Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
