Looking for ideas on what to do with all this metal in the back after I replace the rusted pieces. What is remaining on these areas near the exhaust area and up into the bumper area, its a flakey substance silver in color, some of it is still there but the areas it is gone from thats where the rust is at if you run a tool over it the stuff just falls off, of course it is past its prime so it needs to be redone. It looks like a sprayed coating perhaps it was painted over with the silver? Anyone who has replace the corroded sections have you coated these areas with anything other that POR15 or high temp paint? just wondering what some of you have done after the metal repair. I will be dealing with this shortly as the silver painted covering is coming off my car as well. I think I'm going to try and match the texture of the old coating with ruberized undercoating and then match as best possible the silver color. There are some high temp/ceramic coatings which match the silver color pretty closely. Good luck!
Here's mine. I replaced the tin, luckily the frame underneath was ok. Painted with rust encapsulator and rust prevention frame black paint from Eastwood. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm pretty sure Dinol is just the company that made the coating... I don't remember what the specific coating is called. Some sort of aluminized spray that I believe was also on the fuel tanks. You can approximate it pretty well with Eastwood's Alumablast. Sorry, can't help you with advise on what you should top coating any of this. I replaced all my sheet metal back there with stainless so I didn't coat it with anything. Rick
Johnny, Here's a link to my restoration thread. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=192883 Hope it helps.
I have applied the original Dinol and am pretty familiar with it. I have found Permatex aerosol undercoating prod. #80072 is very close in application and color to the original. I doubt any concours judge would be able to tell the difference.
ok thanks for the info. But now that I look at it Im thinking about putting a euro rear valance on this car... well it will be a winter project anyway so I have some time to think about it.
