I have owned my own swimming pool business since 1984 and was in the business 5 years prior to that. I thought in that period of time I would have seen just about everything imaginable in this crazy business. That was until this past Saturday.
A client of mine called me about a pool that was associated with a forclosed property he had just acquired and wanted my company to clean it up. We descended on it Saturday morning and I was not ready for what we found. This pool apparently had been off for approximately 3 years and had gone from green to black and then partially back to clear due to the abundance of oxygenating plant life that was in the pool. It was a true ecosytem with both plant life and marine life.
    A description of the following pictures;
Picture 1 Yes that is moss in the pool
Picture 2 Yes that is moss also
Picture 3 It looks like the jungle taking over
Picture 4 That is a tree branch in the moss
Picture 5 Yes that is the pool sweep
    Picture 6 Wall moss
Picture 7 Yes that is a turtle that we found in the pool
Picture 8 It is amazing but it cleaned up pretty well
Picture 9 The pool sweep ready to go again
One of the interesting aspects of this project was that it was in a neighborhood of houses that I estimated to be in the $500,000 range and I cannot believe that no one complained. Apparently there was no effective HOA.

The sad part is that the pool is (was?) obviously very nice. Unreal that people would let it get to that.

that was my first thought, I liked the natural pond look with wildlife better than a chlorinated chemical clear pool. :) you know I would be fishing in there. :D

Wow, what a mess!!! The "after" pics looks great!

My wife and I went back to Arkansas a couple of weeks ago to see our sons who still live there. We sold our house there when we moved to Texas in 2008. Apparently the people who bought that house from us didn't make their mortgage payments and obviously never cleaned the pool either. It was foreclosed on a while back and they were forced out a few months ago. We had heard from friends and old neighbors that the new owners had been booted out by the sheriff, so we went to check it out. The pool looked a lot like this one - black water and covered in moss and algae. Definitely a mosquito problem. Very sad. I think what p!ssed us off the most is that we had just spent $20K remodeling the kitchen right before putting the house on the market in 2008, and we sold the house so cheap we had to write a check at closing to pay it off. Then these savages come in and wreck the place. It made my wife cry to see it like that.

When all is said and done it looks like it will be a beautiful setup but a horror to maintain with all the surrounding vegetation, fantastic cleaning job though kudos. Looking forward to some pics after everything is completed and it could be a great promo for your pool service.

Looking at the pics, I notice three things Don...

    1) I wonder if it smelled like Turtle Creek when they drained most of the water out of HP... it may look nice and green, but did it smell like stagnate water?

    2) I wonder how many mosquitos were breeding in there?

    3) I wonder how you made it out alive!

Nice cleanup job. Some friends of ours had a pool they didn't use and let it turn to that a bit...it had a turtle as well (soft shell and larger). Occasionally they would pour chlorine in there for whatever reason and the turtle loved the stuff...it would bathe in it as they poured it in, lol. One day it got out of the pool and its skinned started to peel off so it went back in...so weird. They eventually re did the entire thing when they sold the house (turtle had died by then).

    Nice work.

In response to Jim's question it is Illegal to pump any but run off water down the storm sewer, this was pumped down the sanitary sewer.

Remember this pool had reverted to an ecosystem, so there were fish in there (guppies) that ate the mosquito larva. Also due to the all the moss there was very little odor from the pool--a reason I suspect that it did not attract the ire of the neighbors. The moss had some odor but not much.

I agree with Tillman the jungle picture looks kind of cool. The other aspect of this arrangement is the keeping up with the flora. That is Asian Jasmine and it grows everywhere. It also harbors critters like snakes that can get in the pool and the last thing you want in your black plaster pool is a snake---of any description.

We go up today to replace some equipment and valves that broke due to freeze, then fill it and then start it up. I will update when we do the final start up.

    That is simply incredible!

If possible when you post the update pictures, can you include more of the backyard so we can have more of an idea of the surrounding area?

My friend's father-in-law (my friend works for him, as does his daughter) has owned a pool business here in Houston for several decades and I've never heard any stories remotely close to this. Congrats, you win! :D

that is a really nice pool once you get it cleaned up and running. I bet when new that pool ran $50K+.

I have family members who when their youngest wanted to become a marine biologist that they allowed him to turn the pool into a ecosystem on purpose. Yup!

Anyways- after he got done with college the pool was restored back. Hopefully he learned a lot from it.
