I'm on Facebook, but have never been on Twitter. Would I have any interest in Instagram?

I find I get a lot more response on Instagram than I do on Facebook. When I post to Instagram it automatically goes to Twitter also but I never log in to Twitter to check the responses. Never enough time for all of it.
What I can't figure out is getting followers on Instagram without resorting to trickery or buying them. I've seen accounts in the same field as mine with over 20,000 followers and I struggle to maintain 600.

Sometimes I do wonder if those followers are genuine. But I think people like posts on a daily basis with interesting content. Those tend to get more followers?

No absolutely not. They are fake accounts or at best meaningless followers who will never interact with your content.
Some years ago I had a credit with Facebook and I spent it promoting a page. I gained several thousand followers very quickly but when I looked at where they were located almost all were in Tbilisi Georgia. These "followers" never interacted at all and my other metrics fell because of them. The number of people seeing posts on my page, etc, fell way off. I eventually had to go through and manually delete hundreds of them, mostly based on location.
On Instagram there are all sorts of accounts promising hundreds if not thousands of new followers but the only purpose to this is boosting your ego. There will be no return from any of them.
There is a very interesting article on the account farms where these fake followers get created if you care to learn more:

That's what I've been suspecting. Very interesting info, thanks for sharing.
