As you say, they are a rush to drive. Much as the Ferrari 330 is a special car, you really feel the motorsports DNA in the pre-'74 Porsches. They're light, loud and fast. It's not hard to rebuild a 2.4 litre T or E up to S spec while keeping it cosmetically original. The drawback to the 911 over the 356 is that you get a little more plastic in the interior, so some of the elegance of the '50s/'60s cars is lost. But you get a lot of performance and improved safety (shoulder belts, collapsible steering columns, etc.) in return.
