Like a number of 360 owners, I would like to find a solution to the problem of the having premature shut-off while trying to pump gas. I have resorted to holding the gas pump handle upside down. But this is less than satisfactory because fuel often squirts out or leaks. It has been suggested that replacing the Fuel Vapor canistor might solve the problem. Has anyone done this?
Premature shut off never happens when filling my ['03] 360 and none of the guys I know with 360's have ever complained about this. However it happened frequently with my 328 and after checking around I found that some gas stations seemed to pump slower than others [my local Mobil for one] resulting in no premature shut off. The only other solution was to hold and squeeze the gas pump trigger to slow down the flow while refuelling which solves the early shut off but cramps your hand. Incidentally the "tank full shut off" still works, so no problem with overflow
Yes, at times I have experienced this as well and I just turn the handle upside down as well. Another solution is just not to squeeze the handle as hard, pump the gas a little slower. For me it does not happen all the time and is not that big a pain.
Tilting the handle upwards, nozzle downward opposite from jst letting it rest in the tube works for me.
I just push the nozzle all the way in and then out about 1.5 inches. I can go full blast there until its full. I go to the same gas station most of the time so that helps also.
The guys at my dealer diagnosed this and replaced my vapor canister some time ago. The situation was greatly improved although slow fueling is still needed if I want to really top it off. Toping up all the way like that (i.e., filling the air baffles) is pretty much the same in regular cars and may not be a recommended practice.
It is not advisable to fully top off any car. When you do that, raw fuel "not vapor" will end up in the vapor canister and eventually will damage it. You should stop pumping gas when the gas nozzle clicks due to back pressure from the tank being full. Toping off by continuously by making the the gas nozzle "click" several times will damage your EVAP system. New California regulations in the past couple years have mandated different gas pump designs that are more sensitive to shutting off. Try few different gas stations and see if the problem is consistent. There are several different nozzle designs that are approved by the State and one of them might work better if the problem is not related to the car.
Gents, My solution is to fill it until the nozzle pops. Then stand around chatting with the attendant for two minutes. This gives the fuel time to transfer to the other tank. Then start pumping gas again. After the second pop, you're done and your tanks will be full without overfilling. Doug 2004 360 Modena F1
Don't they have a pill to help with that? Seriously, we run into this alot with the trucks we have made with aftermarket bodies. It is usually a kink or other problem with the fuel filler line or the vent line. Have you shop take a peek and see if anything is out of wack. Maybe blow out the vent line too. Ed
My situation is pretty bad. Unless the handle is upside down at 12 o'clock, it shuts off in 2-3 seconds. Impossible to fill. So I turn the handle upside down and it still pops off but every 20 seconds. Yes if I just barely trickle the gas in things are a little better. But then gas squirts out on my shoes and leaks out on the paint. I just ordered the fuel vapor canistor from Ricambi. I hope it will improve the situation. Thanks for the feedback.
Replaced vapour canister and solved the problem. This fixed my problem. I was also told never continue to fill to the top as the raw fuel in the canister creates the problem in the long term.
Would someone please let me know what number is that part on Ricambi's web site? I could not find it yet. http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=669 Thanks
This is a real problem in LA. They have special nozzles. When I had my F430 in LA it was hard to fill. In Nevada it's no problem. My Maserati is worse if you can believe that. I'm lucky to get it 7/8's full even with the shut off stopping the flow 6 or 7 times. Many times I left the station thinking it was completely full only to see the gauge say 3/4. Believe it or not try a different pump or service station. I found that some work better than others. They are not 100% identical.
Solution found: replace the fuel vapor canister! I just had the canister replaced and filled up my gas tank at a station in So Cal without any fuss! Should have done this months ago instead of listening to FChatters suggesting holding the nozzle upside down! That is not a Real solution with gas spraying out.
Call Ricambi. The canister part varies according to the version of 360. Mention that you are on F-Chat for a little discount too.
The part I replaced is called the fuel vapor cannister and is a black plastic part about the size of a sboe box.
My 360, CS, and 458 all have this problem in California. Two solutions: 1. Pull back the accordion seal slightly and hold it there until filling is done. 2. Cut a 0.5" section of a 2.0" plastic pipe and insert the gas nozzle through it. This keeps the accordion back to let the gas fill. Works great for me.
confirmed ...if its a pain in the butt to fill your 360 with fuel (constantly clicking off upon fill up) replace the charcoal vapor canister ... fixed all my slow fill woes
i took the charcoal canister hose off and used a piece of stiff yet pliable wire and pushed it in and out in the canister where i removed the hose. it broke up the charcoal and i can get a full top up when the pump clicks off. I do not use the full speed fill on the nozzle ,i cut it back a bit. that depends if the pump is mad fast. worked for me
I have the same problem and I believed that it was the design of the filler pipe that created a backpressure (splashback within the fill pipe) thereby shutting off the pump. My solution was to pump the gas slowly and I don't have that problem anymore.
