Yesterday was a bad day, I had finished installing the Holley EFI in the 308, and the first couple times I ran it, it started right up, but ran rough.

Then yesterday, it just ran terribly. I fiddled with the fuel map all day, and it just would not behave. It was just popping and snorting all day, sounded terrible.

Then, today, I went out to the garage, fiddled a bit with the start-up pulse width, and it started nicely and ran pretty smooth all day (actually only for 15-20 min at at time, until the temp got up over 220)...so it's just fickle...Holley EFI is a mystery. Works poorly one day, works much better the next.

Does anyone out there really know how aftermarket EFI works ?? If so I would like to hear from you, and know your suggestions on how to make it consistent.

This is the second Holley EFI installation I have done and it's still a mystery to me.

EFI works great if tuned properly.

Now, in order of preference on EFI, I would suggest Motec, AEM, FAST, Accel, and Holley in that order for tunability/runability, though there may be some switching around of the first three. I have no personal experience with the Holley, though from comments I have read elsewhere, some people can't get a Holley to work, maybe it is them, maybe it is their motor, maybe it is the combo of motor and ECU, I don't see complaints about the other boxes, but that may strictly be because more people/novice tuners buy Holley as compared to others due to lower price or name recognition. I suspect most of it is novice tuners, as many who attempt to tune an ECU don't fully understand mechanical spark advance, vacuum advance and motor vacuum effects on gasoline requirements.

Motec, AEM, FAST seem to be used by road racer types and the Accel and Holley units more toward 1/4 mile pedal to metal WOT types. All five will be streetable when tuned correctly, the less expensive Accel and Holley boxed are missing some of the real fine tune features the more expensive other boxes have, but that stuff only helps make the motor run more seamless, for lack of a better word, or those boxes also have more options for boost and nitrous. There are others like Haltech and Autronic and others still I have not enough info to offer any opinion on at all.

My suggestion is fine a good tuner shop that installs and knows how to dyno tune ECUs and talk to them and take the car there and pay to get it tuned right. A good dyno tuner can do in 2-3 hours what you will spend 40 hours trying to do on the street.

Personally, I have an Accel box on a big inch Chev V8, but if I go EFI on the 308, it would be AEM or Motec.

BTW, Make sure your injectors aren't too large, bigger in NOT better, and largest is not best! You really want an injector that is running at 60%-70% capability at WOT (80% is theoretically ideal, but allows no room for engine improvements), an injector that is running 20% or 30% at WOT will offer poor low speed drivability
