My experience is that most people on the road are "just plain stupid", never ceases to amaze me some of the stuff people do. I think the states should make the drivers test harder or something.

Being from NJ, it teaches you to drive in anything. People never signal, and have a blatent disreguard for their own or others saftey. Going to school in Rochester, NY is a big change, but people here suck at driving too. Just nowhere near as bad as in NJ. My biggest pet peeve is still tailgating. If people would just leave the proper 1 car length per 10 mph, we would all be a lot better off. I think that the drivers test should be harder, but I also think that we should switch to the autobahn-esque tailgating = loss of driving privlages for 6 months, and cut down on the speeding tickets. Going 85mph isn't a danger if you have enough room to stop, it is going 85mph at 12 inches from the car in front of you that is a problem. I am sure this will never change though, seeing as a state trooper will follow you at 12 inches doing 65 as well. Oh well, I guess we are cursed to tolerate ****ty driving.

I had a plain jane old Mercedes 300CE, the two door coupe version of the 300E. Great car. I was heading up to northern Wisconsin one saturday morning in summer and a car load of young a-holes in a Jeep Cherokee (the old 6 banger model) were sitting parked in the left lane at 55mph right next to a semi. Of course the POS had all the requisite Greenpeace and U2 stickers on it. Some anarchists from Madison, no doubt. I was right behind them and behind me after about 10 miles you couldn't see the end of the backup behind us in the rear view mirror.

Finally, the munchies must have taken over and the driver reached down for a twinkie and didn't notice that he had drifted ahead of the truck. I went for the gap, made it and loudly said bad things about their driving skills, their parents, their looks, etc. through my open window into their open windows as I passed them on the right. Maybe I gave them a finger counting lesson too. So they give chase. We pass the 100 mph barrier, the 110 mile an hour barrier and finally I'm pushing 120 and they're falling back rapidly. Suddenly I look in the mirror and a huge cloud of oil smoke erupts from the Cherokee and immediately he is all over the road sliding into the shoulder. Dumb commie anarchist probably changed the oil every 75,000 whether it needed it or not. A rod through the side of the block can ruin a weekend I hope. No donations for World Trade protests that month.

I have read through all of these posts and can relate to every single one, it's true to say that some drivers are stupid because in the words of Scott Adams(Dilbert fame) we are all stupid. I will confess that I have done some pretty stupid stunts in my time and consider I am better driver for it, I wont' make the same mistakes again, that's for sure.
Be safe and don't ever rise to the bait.

Funny, I prefer driving in NJ to NY, MD, DE, and PA. Lane discipline is better and people generally want to just get where they're going. I drive down to MD all the time and NJ Turnpike running is almost always faster and less aggravating than I95 in DE and MD.

Here in the "great NW" we that have a "feel for the wheel" have to subject ourselves to the most interesting driving scenarios in the country. I travel a bit and drive in different states throughout the US. I am fully convinced that here in my home state we have some of the worst examples of how not to drive. We have enough police and probably some of the best state patrol officers that I have ever seen. Maybe it's in the water.......

Come to China where the super rich are in their 40's and 50's and just learned to drive last week. It's really pretty scary. Makes driving in the states look like negotiating an empty parking lot.

BTW, unless you have a Chinese driver's license, you won't be able to rent a car during the GP (or any other time for that matter). Not that you would want to.
