i am considering buying a very nice 1994 968 coupe, black/tan, tiptronic, 75K miles, all dealer maintanence, recent timing belt, needs nothing, very nice cosmetics. the seller will not go under 15K. blue book has the car at 13K. i've already offered 14K and was rejected. the ask is $16K. so...worth it at 15K?

    thanks

I think blue book values don't really take into account a car that might be "worth" more money - such as the case with a low mileage, well cared for 968 Coupe. The way you have described the car I'd almost expect the asking price to be higher. I was looking at 968's about a year ago and most I would have considered had asking prices in the $17,000-$20,000 range.

There are only a few thousand of these in the USA and it seems a large percentage are Tiptronic Cabs. If you've found a nice coupe I think you should snatch it up. They have the potential, if not already, to gain a cult following much like the E30 M3s have.

there was just an article in the april 2007 issue of Excellence magazine about porsche, it was a market update on all 924s, 944s, and 968s. interesting info on the market for those cars and what you should expect to pay

A tiptronic 968 coupe is the kiss of death at resale time.......whereas a tiptronic 968 cabriolet is not. How long has the car been for sale ?

I don't know what these are worth in the US, but I was the Porsche sales manager at our dealer when these were new cars. We couldn't give them away with the 6 speed......and luckily we never ended up with a tip coupe.

FWIW.....the torquey 3.0 247 HP 4 cylinder engine works really well with the tiptronic transmission.

If the transmisison fails though....it is an $8K repair up here....you can't fix them, you have to replace them. Whereas a clutch job is 20% of that.

Wow John, you've been buying a lot lately it seems!

Why do you want to get another TR, BTW? Just curious (I like the idea, although I haven't driven one yet).

Kelly bluebook underestimates the true values sometimes. Luckily, I just bought a rare Lexus SC300 from a poor old lady who did not know of kbb.com. I purchased it for almost 2k under the kbb price. The kbb price did not reflect the true price of my car because it was a manual transmission, and a lot of people are willing to shell out 2k more than the kbb price for a manual.

I mean, come on. I could, right now, go to kbb.com and see what the price is for a 928 GTS manual in prestine condition. It would probably quote me anywhere between 29K-35K. We all know what that true value is.

I would show up with 13.5K cash and tell the guy to take it or leave it. He will take it.

It all depends on how much interest and serious buyers he has had on the car. If nothing, then wait it out if you want to save some money. But if you wait on it, you take the risk of that car being sold.

    968's are very nice!

I had a nice red 1993 968 coupe tiptronic. The tiptronic works wonderfully! It shifts into gear - NOW when you tip it. I always get manuals in my fun cars and I never missed it in that car. It starts in 2nd gear so you just have to get into the habit of moving the lever to the right and tip it down immediately and you're in 1st. I wish I still had that car. Let us know if you get it! Good luck........Oh, it's worth the $15k for sure.

thanks for the replies. i made my offer and i'm waiting to hear back.

ryalex, i have been on a car buying binge lately... :) i want another testarossa because i really enjoyed the last one i had. i wanted to keep it but there was a craving for a modern ferrari rumbling inside me. so i traded it in for a maranello. which is a powerful car, and easy to drive anywhere, but doesn't have the charm, attitude or super cool looks of a testarossa. i miss it. now i've had my stint with a modern ferrari, it's out of my system, so i want to get another TR.

At that mileage, you may have bearing issues in the rear end if it hasn't already been taken care of. Four years ago, I was looking at a 68,000 mile 968 Coupe, but a manual. I could of bought it for $9.5K, finally decided dumb move for a first car to be that nice. Around 70,000 miles, pretty much all 968's need a helping hand in the gearbox to my knowledge. Porsche made a booboo that will need to be fixed around then. Unfortunately, having not looked into a 968 since then, I can't remember what bearing/seat,shaft or whatever it was.
