I pulled this off a post from a respected member of a corvette forum, its pretty funny (from a C6 vs Elise discussion):

"C6. The Elise is a low 13's car at best (IF THAT....that whole 12.0 crap was a typo....they even admitted that later), and yeah it handles well.........but straight line speed in my opinion comes first. It's a prerequisite.

I look at buying a sports car like this: Granted these cars I'm considering as options are fast as hell in a straight line, and I probably couldn't get anything for the price I've limited myself to that are much faster, let's compare handling among those, and choose the one with the best combination of the two.

The Elise is a little "handling guy's" gay Euro ride to me. It's a small car with a weak engine that relies on light weight to be fast. I know it's all opinion, but to me that's probably the worst combination possible.

"It's light" is immediately an excuse for "the engine sucks" about 95% of the time. Again, I know it's all opinion, but I prefer a car that weighs a good 3000 lbs or so and can still rip it up. "Well your car is lighter" has been an excuse to me when I hear that coming from someone who has a car that weighs ~3000lbs. Produce some power. Don't just make a light car. Just my two cents.

"Well, then by that standard a Ferrari and a Porsche suck too". Nope. Both have stronger engines - much stronger - and are both larger and more formidable looking. Both also weigh about the same as your average sports car too....and they're still fast. "

I see what the guy is saying, but that is a pretty ignorant point of view.

I hate to say it, but some of the points are valid. I've posted here before that 3000 lbs is about as light as I like my street cars (race cars can be as light as they can be of course). There are a lot of reasons I feel that way, but crash safety and wet traction are the 2 biggest. Also, power to weight ratio gives you acceleration off the line and is the same for any cars light or heavy with the sam ration. But acceleration at highway speed starts to depend a lot more on drag to power ratio and above 100 it's almost all governed by drag, with weight (within reason) playing almost no part anymore. High speed stability depends on aerodynamics, which in turn are limited by physical dimension ratios. Any car needs to be some hieght to let you get in and out reasonably, so a small car needs the same height as a bigger car. Once the height is fixed, a wided and longer car can have a better aerodynamic profile than a smaller one, again within limits. Thats a big part of why 360s are longer and wider than my 308, which is long and wider than an elise.

You could just end it by saying that, Lotus's are built to be light and agile and dont need any more horsepower, besides if you own a Lotus you are not compensating for anything else ;)

Sometimes corvette owners get on my nerves they think the corvette is God's gift to automobiles it just pisses me off, no offense to any owners here

Is this an american vs. europe thing?
When Europeans measure a sportscar alot of the magazines drive the car on the Nürburgring in Germany, 12,5 miles of twisty turns and fast straights.
And believe me horsepower does not win the race there...
I've seen a lot of Elise's outrun both Porsche's and Corvette's on the ring.
I mean straight line performance is one thing, sure it's fun to spray the car next to you at redlights but don't you have twisty roads in america?
The road to my sportscabin is about 110 miles of twisty, turning roads.
A real blast to drive but I would choose a light sportscar like the Elise over a Corvette any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
