    Hi everyone...I had a bad encounter with a duely tonite

    <rant on>

    I was driving to the local video store tonite, when something terrible ALMOST happened. I had been driving for about 5 minutes through swurvy, country roads when a huge Ford F350 duely(was towing a boat) came out of a turn that I was approaching. I was going 45mph (speed limit) and this guy was going about 45 also. The roads out here are somewhat thin and leave no room for reckless drivers.

    He was talking on a cell phone (why can't they just PULL OVER to talk!) AND reading what appeared to be a map. Needless to say, his attention was NOT on the road...he was riding about 4 or 5 feet over in my lane, which left only about 4 feet of pavement for me. I was driving my 300zx Twin Turbo (not exactly a slim n' trim car) so I definately needed more than 4 feet of pavement. As we got closer and closer, I was braking as hard as I could (I slowed down to about 20mph), but I just couldn't stop...even if I had stopped he would have just plowed right into me. When we got within 10 feet I realized he WASN'T going to get back in his lane and he was not making any effort to slow down (this moron probably didn't even notice me...I guess his cell phone conversation is more important than the lives of other motorists). Well...I had to put about half of my car into the grass (which is horribly uneven and a ditch that is about 5 feet deep is about 6 feet into the grass). I was only driving in the grass for about 2 seconds, but that 2 seconds was as close to hell as I care to get. I heard all kinds of plastic and metal scraping etc...I just knew my paint was destroyed and the underbody was probably scratched to pieces.

    When I finally got the car back under control, I turned around to go in search of this ******* (he didn't even stop after the incident). I drove about 10 miles, but I did not see any trace of the guy.

    I continued on my way to the video store; I then got out to see the damage. Thank God nothing major happened. The rocks in the grass did tear off a rather large chunk (about 6 inches) of plastic off the underbody. But aside from that nothing happened.

    I'm just amazed at this guy because:

    -He wasn't paying any attention to the road whatsoever
    -He was talking on the cell phone
    -He was reading a map while driving
    -He didn't even bother to stop after he saw me run off the road.

    I'm still a bit upset about the whole matter...but it's over now. I was riding with my brother, but unfortunately neither of us got the license plate number.

    </rant off>

    Ok...I'm done venting now. Am I overreacting or do I have a right to be upset with this guy? I was just afraid that my freshly detailed 300zx had been destroyed. Thank God it wasn't!

    Thanks for letting me vent

    I hear you loud and clear. Because of a$$holes like that guy I gave up riding motorcycyles (31 years with no tickets or accidents) Just in the last year I had three very very close calls on my ducati with the same type of jerk. I kinda felt like my number could be up and I don't want to orphan my kids because of some coffe drinking, cell phone gabbing, lipstick putting on, hair brushing, mc donald eating, accident gauking non driving piece of camel dung. Two weeks ago I saw a lady "driving" a mini van run a motorcycylist down from behind, guy never had a chance and did'nt even see it coming. Glad to hear you and your brother were not hurt.

    Somehow it does not surprise me you are from NC. This has to be the epicenter of the "lane-sharers". I swear, I have never seen worse drivers than in these mountains. I cannot believe how EVERY time I go out, I will encounter some one sharing my lane on a blind mountain curve. The size of SUVs has not helped, but the WORST are those obsenely large Dodge trucks, God, I hate those monsrosities.
