LOS ANGELES--At today's pre-E3 conference held at Sony Pictures Studios, two questions that have been on gamers minds were answered. Sony president Kaz Hirai revealed the PlayStation 3's price and launch date. The PS3 will be released in Japan on November 11, and the United States on November 17, 2006. Like the Xbox 360, the PS3 will come in two configurations, one with a 20GB hard drive and one with a 60GB hard drive.

The 20GB will retail for $499 in the US (59800 yen in Japan, 499 euros in Europe), and the 60GB model will retail for $549 (open price in Japan, 599 euros in Europe). Sony expects to ship two million units in its first month of launch, four million by the end of the year, and six million by the end of its fiscal year, which ends in March 31.

Just read the cheaper PS3 will not have a slots for SD / Compact flash and will also NOT HAVE AN HDMI output...

Hmmm guess you really have to buy the most expensive one. PS3 w/o HDMI won't be able to do 1080p and really won't do Blu-Ray movies justice.

It’s all about the software, without that you really have nothing but an overpriced PC. There is a rumor about F1 2006 but with our luck it's going to hit the European market. I'd give it a half a year or so to get the bugs out of the system but that won’t stop me from buying one anyway.

    Yeah it's only $599 and you get a Blu-Ray player... I really don't think it's overpriced.

    Thanks!

They mentioned Gran Turismo HD, but went on to say that the next Gran Turismo game will be even better. So from that, this HD version is NOT GT5.

YES YES YES I so excited about that thats sooo low compared to the prices that were being thrown around a few weeks ago. As far a blue ray I dont really know how great it is or really what it is so maybe someone can help me out, but I heard stand alone BR players could come out at 1k so its not that bad

go to this link to see a preview for F1 06 for PS3.

    http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/748/748480/vids_1.html

There is a one minute trailer you can watch for the F1 game. It looks awesome. They better release that game in the the U.S. Be sure to check out the 05 preview as well(It is the same game I believe). That one is more exciting.

High Def. video discs with a lot more storage than DVD :)

Going to be a battle between the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD standards for a while.

As someone who has had about 10 systems over the years (I was the guy who bought Atari Jaguar...), I'll say that $599 and even $499 is way too much for a console system. And I paid about $530 CAD for to have Sega Saturn the day it came out. But those days are past, and I haven't even gotten the 360 yet... I'm going to wait for it to go down a bit first.

My spider-sense is tingling about Blu-ray - I think it will not be successful. I'm surprised their PSP "UMD" format lasted more than 10 minutes.

Frankly, I agree with Nintendo that my game systems are for games. I have a DVD player, computer, etc. separately. I don't want everything in one unit- because I want to upgrade different things at different times.

Had them all too, even a 3DO... ~700... I also paid ~600 (um my mom did) for the Saturn on launch, including 2 controllers and games.

I think 600 isn't too much. Avg. gamer is in his/her late 20's. If you really want something that $600 I'm sure a lot of those late 20 year olds could afford it.

Might cut into the early/mid teens that need their parents to purchase it for them... but that's what Wii is for.

I remember I got PS1 around the day it came out as a 13th birthday present. I agreed to split half with my dad to get it. Packaged with Ridge Racer, an extra controller and another game came out to exactly $400. But that damn machine was more than worth it. Has a little trouble loading now, but still works.

I know I'll get the PS3 down the road, just not the day it comes out as I did with PS1 and 2. When you just tell your mom(who knows nothing about electronics) you want PS2 for christmas and tell her the day it comes out and find out she bought it that day as well....those are some true shopping skills.

Actually, the Wii is the only console of this generation that I'm going to buy. Nintendo doesn't have the horsepower of the others, but I don't need to spend hundreds of dollars for shiny graphics on a console. That's what my computers are for. The Wii is the only of the new consoles that's coming up with something different. I agree with what they've said. Gaming is getting stale. Studios are going to start revolting about having to produce games to meet the higher specs at higher risks and lower margins, and gameplay will suffer.

Isn't it slightly humorous that after Sony mocked the Wii controller as a gimmick, they added the basic functionality to their controller? From seeing the demos, it was obviously a last minute add-on.

I found it weird too - frankly I'd rather have the dual shock than telemetry, at least when it's a conventional controller. The telematics would be good on other things like a bat/sword or gun for most applications IMO.

The rising studio costs are going to push a greater divide between $5mm-20mm games and cheap indie games (and rehashes of classics, which we're seeing already... so many compilation discs lately).

I've been thinking about it and there are only a few games I will end up buying, even though I plan on Xbox 360 (Halo junkie). however, the Wii is tempting because of my young boy(s). He already wants to try and play and I'm thinking there will be better kid's content on the Wii.

    Wii?

Is it pronounced "wee" or "why" or "whih" or what?

Maybe I'm a numbnut, but it seems to me that marketing 101 - don't have ANY confusion over the name and pronunciation of your frickin product!

yeah, agreed. I still think the name is dumb. But then again, Playstation sounded like a Fisher-Price product, and "Xbox" is pretty retarded too IMO.

"Hey, the letter X is SOOO cool and hip... let's just call it the 'X' Box!"

    And someone approved that.

And then there's Xbox 2. "Wait, our teenager focus groups think the number 360 is way cooler than 2. There's the Ferrari 360, Anderson Cooper 360..."
