...contacted one of the owners of a particular car I have in my database! I posted the history of of this and various cars here to provide infos of historical aspects!

I have to say that I am very annoyed about the attempt of this person to buy the car from the owner! STOP THAT!

    Ciao!
    Walter

Not only should they stop, but it also should be noted that their actions are subject to legal action via privacy laws broken in using this information other than how it was intended.

What privacy laws, exactly? Although I would never consider using Walter's information without his permission, this is exactly the reason why one has to be careful about posting any sort of information about private individuals and their assets in the public domain without their consent. This is not a subscription-based sub-forum and, thus, is viewable and probably searchable by the general public.

What harm is there in tracking an owner through information you made public if he would like to sell his car. If he's not interested he just has to say no. I've bought several cars by learning the owners name from magazine articles or internet info. Sometimes they weren't interested right then but later circumstances had changed.JMO

    It was my fault.
I naively posted info about a car I was thinking of taking on as a restoration project...and wanted some advice.
The owner had no intention of advertising it for sale.....but wanted to sell it to me based upon a close mutual contact who told him about my love for Maseratis.
    He is a private guy.

J.S. Could you be more specific were in the terms of use it says you cannot contact someone. I read it a couple times and don't see anything but sometimes it needs to hit me upside the head before I comprehend something. I want to make sure I follow the rules but all I could make out the person posting someones elses name and personal info is the one breaking the rules. Thanks

Walter I'm very sorry to hear that. This is the primary reason that I do not forward such details when you ask about a car because when someone is nice enough to let me look at or use their car I respect their
desire to not have it publicly broadcast. I know that was not your intent in this case as I know you to be a true aficionado, actually, YOUR NUTS ABOUT MASERATI'S. But this is one side effect. Unfortunately we live in a world where people feel free to abuse each other with impunity due to the anonymity of the Internet. Just like the way people do stuff in traffic they'd never do while waiting in a line (queue) because they'd be physically accosted at once.

Yup and that was my immediate impression when this thing unfolded.

Rule #1 when pursuing a car that is both desirable and cheap. Tell no one anything that will let them scoop you. Essentially you advertised his car as being for sale, cheap.

Bet you don't do that again.

Hope the car works out for you.

After reading this thread thru again I think there is more to it than the OP stated which was basically a person seeing an owner of a cars name listed and calling to see if he is interested in selling which has happened to me several times by people seeing a couple cars I have listed in registries. I've never had a problem I just politely tell them no. This sounds more like a end run by someone trying to snipe a deal.

Again, I don't agree that what the person did was right, but I'm pretty sure my legal training gives me enough background to say that the above is probably more applicable to Walter's posting information about cars he does not own than to someone using that information - but I hope it does not discourage Walter from continuing with his invaluable historical records of the cars we all love. Not counting the fact that TOU are not laws, and carry no criminal or civil penalties, just the privilege to post. You may want to try again.

Sounds like the one who posted the info is the one who violated this rule by transmiting information that invaded someone's privacy .

You are seriously arguing this or are you just trolling? The intentions of this thread are going to be lost if points such as the above are quibbled over. The point is to stop using what could be copyrighted information for purposes other than for that of what it was intended for.

Questioning legality is not for you or I to determine because it is certainly questionable, but I am sure it could be argued elsewhere, such as a legal forum. I am not terribly familiar with federal copyright laws or anything specific to Texas (which is how this forum is legally kept in check last time I looked), but this is seriously off-topic now so this is moot. Next please.

J.S. You are the one that brought up the legal aspect in this post and now that you are called on it you want to move on. Copyright someones name and ownership? The only point I was trying to make was tracking down a car in an attempt to purchase from a name posted on the internet in my opinion is neither illegal or an invasion of privacy. Since we don't know the whole story here maybe you are right, it is time to move on.

Yes. My initial comment was parellel with the intent of the thread. Now, we are moving onto an entirely new subject of copyright information and discussions thereof. Trying to keep on topic here

Why would you post a owners name and contact info anyway? A s/n and state or city should be all the info available to the public.
