Planning a summer holiday and thinking of a trip to miami with a couple of days renting a car to drive down to key west. I've never been to florida before despite being quite well travelled so unsure if this is a bad idea in itself but something decent to drive would surely make it a better trip in itself.

Can anyone recommend a car or a rental company with some good deals for someone in my position? Had a look online and unsurprisingly prices are crazy to rent an exotic for a few days in the miami area. $3k to rent a fcar for three days is well out of my league as is probably not far off the cost of running my 360 for a full year at home.

Was thinking some type of vette or muscle car as a last resort but still kinda exotic to us british folk as you don't see many on the road here. From browsing though they seem to be bottom spec, entry level models which will probably leave me a bit unsatisfied.

    Any and all suggestions welcome!

I'm sure you can find a Mustang GT, Camaro SS, Challenger at many of the standard rental companies. A Corvette shouldn't be too hard to find either. 3k for three days is hard to justify to me also.

KC, I'm not sure what your plans are in Miami, but have you considered where you will go and how you would use an exotic car?

Just throwing it out there that you might want to spend the money elsewhere. I especially don't think KW is a great place for an exotic. Miami might be a place for show but it might be more hassle then it's worth.

Rent a convertible Mustang, Vette or Camaro from Hertz at the airport. Perfect kind of car for a drive down to the Keys.

Be aware - a convertible is going to be really hot in the Keys during the summer

Forget the convertible, its 90 degrees everyday and the trek to Key West is 100 miles single file at 35 mph; Sound like fun?? Its not.

I fly to West Palm Beach often (Miami has similar cars), and I usually get a 5 Series BMW from Avis for under $800 per week. Holidays are nearly double that, but you should get a good rate in the summer. Sign up for a free corporate account and save an additional 10-20%.

I've done that drive to Key West, and as another chatter said, it would be brutal in a convertible in summertime.

OMG guys, i have live here for 40 years and have had always a Convertible. Helloooo it is a
a Convertible, so if you dont want the top down, dont put it down but at least have the option. A convertible in South Florida is the greatest ! This, a convertible is the best sunbathing machine on the planet.

I also have two convertibles, if you call the 308GTS a convertible, and I would not drive 35mph with the top down all the way to Key West. Did that, got the T-shirt, it sucked!

But at night, yeah, then its great.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I assumed it would be a nice drive to key west so gave that a miss and took a boat down there instead for a day trip. Ended up just hiring a car for a day to drive from sarasota to miami beach as I figured I wouldn't need a car when once there. $60 for a dodge challenger which I though was very cheap. Wasn't impressed by the car tbh and wish I had gone for a mustang or camero instead especially after getting a puncture in the middle of the everglades on the way down. Glad I did it though and definitely put the car through its paces, but again thanks for the feedback.
