    Thats horrible.

I wonder if you still have to pay hospital bills? Not trying to be a jerk about it, but would it ?

This is UNBELIEVABLE, and frankly this is criminal.

Someone I know just went through an ordeal with streptococcus and is FINE, w/o any amputation, etc.

Seriously, this is just ******* E D up! This kind of unbelievable malpractice, and then the hospital totally jacking over the woman rather than accepting blame, makes me want to take cause against them myself.

Get used to it. These new super-germs are unstoppable. Unless you physically remove the tissue, i.e amputate. No antibiotics work. They can be contracted in the hospital OR the community. Interesting page 1 WSJ article this week about a child that got one at home.

There will be plenty more of it, for sure.

Of course, someone will need to be sued each time it happens. Pity the docs in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What is unusual about this case is they were aggressive enough to save her life, most die. This of course would make John Edwards jizz.

BTW, the new federal laws known as HIPAA make it illegal to give he any info about other patients, there are civil and criminal penalties for this, hence the need to sue to get a court order to get the info.

A lot depends on how quickly they get to it. My friend went into toxic shock, and was rushed to the hospital (she's on antidepressants, etc.) - they thought it was gangrene at first. Obviously it's still going on (has been for many months) but the infection itself is long gone. There was a period of risk with respect to amputatoin, but aggresive work has left little more than scarring and a lot of tissue reconstruction.

Maybe it's an isolated case and clearly some backwater random hostpital isn't going to be nearly as good as Stanford, but you still have to wonder about the timing of this kind of thing.

Plus, even if they DID save her life, they should at least disclose what took place to come to that decision.

She had a germ that was treatable with antibiotics, the new super-germs are not. Hard to compare the cases.

To assume that a bad outcome = malpractice is unfortunate.

I don't know about this case, maybe there was malpractice, and maybe not; the bad outcome does not say, although a sympathetic jury will often vote with their hearts. This is one of the 3 reasons I got out of medicine. This is one of the 3 reasons that I urge ALL doctors to get out of medicine.

BTW, I never had a single lawsuit in my practice, not one.

The part about them not telling her anything is very unlikely; we have onlythe patient's side of the story. The hospital does not want to make a public statement. I have personally known patients with whom HOURS have been spent explaining things, and to the next doc they see they say "Thay didn't tell me nuthin'."

WOW! You need to change your name to "the teflon Doc". I did orthopaedic surgical sales for years and I don't think I know a surgeon who hasn't been sued at least once. Hats off to ya Doc. :)

Sounds like she got this "germ" at the hospital, and the admin types are doing whatever they can to hide that fact.

Less lawyers, more bullets into the back of the heads of people like this!
