Yesterday I noticed that the silicone seal on the RHS MAF unit had come away slightly in one corner, I was just going to re-seal it but decided to remove the MAF and take off the cover....and it was half full of water!
Looking at the rusty screws inside the unit the water must have been there for a while, I dried it out and reassembled it, the car runs better than it ever has since I got it last year (after also doing an ECU reset)
The circuit board inside does have a protective sealant on it but I'm sure it's not designed to operate half full of water.

I'm assuming the engine ECU was running in default mode on that bank of the engine and substituting standard settings for the MAF.
If the engine gets wet, by washing the car or using it in the rain, water seems to collect on top of the MAF unit and normally this would not be a problem, but if the seal is not perfect I guess the water can get into the cover, as it has on mine.

I had running problems recently that were largely cured by replacing a displaced air hose, but I'm surprised how well it ran with this MAF unit out of service.

I have sprayed mine with a silicone sealant but i suppose if there is a crack or a gap then water may get in anyway.

It stands for Mass Air Flow as far as I am aware.

Apart from the silicone around the lid there's no seal on the unit, so if this is compromised, and the unit gets wet, water will get in to it.
