I got the notice today that the IRS rejected my sons tax return. It was his first one and was only the 1040EZ. Found out that the SS# on the return did not match the one that SS has. I had used the SS# that was on the W2, mistakedly assuming that it was correct.

It was just a six week summer job that only paid him about $2300 so he is getting back everything that was withheld from his check. But, since his job reported it with a wrong SS# it may it may be quite a while before he gets his refund due to the fact that the witholding tax was not listed under his SS#.

I think I am upset with his old job but I guess I better go there and make sure that the original employment packet did not contain an incorrect SS# as that would put the blame directly in my sons lap. It would mean he had told them wrong from the beginning and he will just have to wait while it gets figured out. If it is their fault, grrrrrr...........

Any of you guys ever had to try to straighten out something like this before???

not with the IRS, I had AT&T get the last 4 of my social transposed and so I couldn't access my account. Went to an AT&T office to try to get it straightened out, and they wouldn't release information b/c I didn't know the last 4 of my social! because they got it wrong! Idiots.

can't your son's employer just re-issue the W2 with a corrected SSN and be done with it? or would that not solve the withholding tax problem?

    Good Luck!!!
My parents just finished a 2.5 year ordeal over this. Some slackjaw key tapper entered the wrong SSN for my mom at the IRS. Everything was correct on their return, but the IRS said it didn't match their records. It didn't matter what the ssn said the previous years, that little computer screen was now saying something was amiss. My dad had to get a lawyer to get it fixed since he nearly drove himself to insanity talking to drone after drone trying to explain what should have been a very simple fix!
