Nice teaser clip, not great quality, but I love it. This is why F1 beats the hell out of NAStyCAR

I can't wait to see the 430 replaced with this V-8. Can anyone say 430 CS, with a slightly detuned Formula One V-8, screaming to 10K RPMs?

This car will be the ultimate Ferrari until the FXX debuts.

I'm sure BMW will do something similar with their next generation 5 and 6 series. MB will certainly use this engine to give Ferrari some serious competition with their McLaren division.

It seems very likely that the connection between road and track will be closer than it's been since the '50s and '60s.

    Forza,

Thanks for the clip. Had to do a double take on that, it's not usual to hear a V8 sounding like that. A new dawning.

Wouldn't work. A Formula 1 engine detuned to 10,000rpm would have a small fraction of its normal power output. When you consider that the V10's idle at 5 - 6000rpm, and the new V8's even higher, 10,000rpm is a slow cruise down the pitlane.

Because of their specific design with a short stroke, they don't produce much power and very little torque at low RPM, and as a result would be especially hopeless for trying to propel a car with double the weight of a Formula 1 car.

In fact, when launching from the grid, they drop the clutch at 10,000rpm.

Maybe slightly off-topic but how much is the F50 egine derived from the contemporary F1 engine?

p.s. the first link of the new V8 sound doesn't work for me (Netscape gives an error). Anyone have another workable link for me?

    Ciao, Peter

Well for one thing, the F50 doesn't have pneumatic valves like the F1 engine.

Also, the F1 engines of 1995 were revving to around 15,000, and the F50 around 10,000, so the F1 engine revs half as fast again.

The idea of the F50 being a "Formula 1 car for the road" wasn't so much about individual components being the same or derived from an F1 car, but rather the overall design concept being similar - for example, the way the engine is a stressed member of the chassis, stiffening the car to improve handling.

Nice, but not to long ago we were treated sounds of 12's. That was a sound.
A couple years ago at Indy they fired up an old 12 carb'ed Ferrari F1.
I did not the display of vintage F1 cars this year.

Seems like as the cylinders reduce the rpm's increase.

The 10's are close to 20k and the 8's will exceed 20k.

This is interesting to me since I have an old Supertiger .35 inch displacement.
It produces 1.5 hp at 21k, makes me wonder about the HP capability of these engines. The old turbo charged 12's at 1.5 liter were around 1200 hp. That is
I think about 12 hp per cubic inch.

It was not that long ago 1hp per cubic inch was the goal street cars, talking
    about Ford and Chevy's.

Getting to old to complete a thought, yearing for the good old 12 cylinder days.

Same amount per cylinder as the V10's, which means 700's area. An 800 hp engine next year would be the powerful one to watch if that helps.

This is wierd... when did this recording take place? You can hear people clapping there (about 1/3 into the recording, maybe a bit further), I would have thought any tests on the V8, or the new cars for 2006 would have been done away from the eyes/sight of the public.... or am I just hearing things?

Maybe that's the F1 team congratulating themselves on a successful new V8

Yes, you're right, a direct carryover wouldn't work. But I'm sure some of the techniques and technologies could carryover directly from a V-8 F1 car to a V-8 street car, and I mean more than e-diff and manettino.

It's speculation, of course, but I would be surprised if Ferrari doesn't pull the road closer to the track in every way possible, and this will be even easier with a V-8 F1 engine.
