I hear that Schumi got himself a Shelby Super Daytona Coupe. Not one of the original 6, but one of the two 427 coupes. The latter of the two being sold last year, the former I haven't heard about for at least a few years. From what I hear there is nothing previously said of which of the cars he has received, if any.

Just curious to what people here would say to hear that one of the princes to the Ferrari throne is owning one of the cars that played a big part in the Cobra/Ferrari Wars

    It doesn't surprise me.

I don't think the association you mentioned is really a factor in his purchase choice. It's probably just an investment.

I was told that Mr. Shelby is presently not in great health. I would assume, therefore, that anything with his tag will escalate in value now.

B-J has a Corvette that was Mr. Shelby's. Bet that will go for a pretty penny.

Good for him. I would buy whatever I wanted if I had his wealth. :) I am sure he is a car enthusiast and not totally 'fixated' on Ferraris. He probably has a nice little collection of cars that are not Ferraris. :)

As far as I know there was 1 not 2 427 "continuation" coupe which was auctioned last Aug. What chassis # are you talking about? This car isn't original, is a ***** to drive, has no race history and IMO the hacked in aux. lights are vom.

Contrary to popular belief, people who drive/own/work for Ferrari actually DO buy cars not made by said company. In fact, I think the poster above me owns one of the GT40's that beat Ferrari at Le Mans back in the 60s. Never seen anyone complain about that...

I could have sworn there were two. I'm still surprised to how much body modifications were made to the already perfect Daytona body. It definately doesn't look any better.

I never said that it was a bad thing that he bought it, just that I was surprised. Especially because of what Jim said with it having no racing history, unlike every other coupe.

Does anyone know how much it sold for last year?

from what i hear one of the 427 "super snake" is gonna be at Barrett-Jackson this year.

this car could break all records.

i know if i had unlimited funds, i would buy this car and not let anyone out bid me. could be one of the greatest sports cars of all time.

i had always heard there was only two super snakes ever built, one for shelby himself and the other went to bill cosby. now i didnt know the one tht went to cosby was destroyed, per link below. so this might be shelby's super snake that is up for auction ??

i find tht hard to believe, but who knows, if thts true and this is shelbys super snake available; it could possibly be one of the most valuable sports cars of all time.

if it really is shelby's personal super snake, lets hear some estimates on how much it brings. i am gonna say +20 mil

i would take this car over ANY car in the world. even over ANY 250 GTO. sorry but true :)

    _______________________________

after some more searching, i am starting to believe this is shelbys personal super snake.

i cant believe this car is for sale. amazing.

    http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=1301

    -edit...

well after thinking about it for a few mins, my bet increases to +25 mil actually. this is the greatest sports car ever built and someone with unlimited funds will realize that and not be outbid.

<still in shock this car is changing hands, i cant believe the Shelby family is letting it go>

if anyone knows Larry Ellison, please let him know about this :)

Please don't confuse the Super Coupe with the Super Snake. One Super Coupe was built and two Super Snakes were built. Thats it. Your estimate for the Super Snake is very optimistic. Probably more in the range of $3-5M.
The Super Snake has a huge hood scoop to clear the twin Paxton superchargers.

Here is the catalog description of the Super Snake from B-J.
    http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=1301

I even think the $3-5 mil someone suggested is probably high, but who knows. I sometimes get the impression that the when it comes to some B-J bidders, the intelligence to money ratio is inversely proportional. I mean, come on, $100k for an Amphicar?

And just to take the thread further off track, here is one that really could bust the long standing auction record for a car.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/07/ncar07.xml

I'd bid on it but I already have one. Though mine is only about 10 inches long.

    Cheers,
    Kurt

The car was never built in the day. It was "finished" long after the Ford /Ferrari wars were over. It never raced nor based on descriptions of those who drove it is it likely it would have won anything. The car had so much front end lift that I remember it being described as "undrivable".

The Real Daytona Coupes (289) are an entirely different matter. They were/are the real deal.

    I'm with U on this.

It will be interesting to watch both of these auctions. IMHO anyone who pays more than 1.5 Large/Large for the SS is sniffing glue. The Auto Union my guess is 10 Large/Large. ($)

That guy driving into the Pacific and the girl who toasted herself with the pet bunnies makes TWO suicides linked to Cobras....

I thought only Ferrari ownership could cause such levels of depression.....

I ran across a Daytona Coupe in AZ at Bondurant...I didn't ask if it was real, but the 250LM and 275GTB lightweight were real......I'll find a picture and post it......

    Bubba,

Here is the first Daytona Coupe built. This is the one that was owned by the crazy bunny lady. This is how it looked when they found it, with the exception of pumping the tires back up.

That's the one, and Phil Spector wants it back as soon as he gets out of prison for killing that actress! LOL!

I believe the courts have ruled the Sale valid......it's staying on the East Coast.

The one I saw was in much better shape, shaking down in AZ for Pebble....my finger was on the lens but I'll find it and post. Total coincidence we were zooming by FireBird that day.....5/17/04.....

"Aero design by eye." Wind tunnel and true understandind of areo effects on a car were still a little in the dark ages. Looks similar to the Breadvan GTO.
