    Does anyone know of a good source for stainless steel safety wire? I'm assembling some two piece brake rotors, and the bolts need to be safety wired. I need 0.032" wire, must be stainless. None of the local auto parts places seem to carry it. Any ideas where I can find it?

    Do you have an airpot with a FBO (Fixed Base Operator) (place where they work on planes) nearby?
    They use it all the time and I'm sure they will sell you a spool, od give you a few feet.

    I've even seen it at Harbor Frieght. Check the local motorcycle shops too. Or any racer or raceprep shop will give you a few feet. Don't forget Summit, Jegs etc but Pegasus had a good price on it last time I checked. Do you have the safety wire plyers? The motorcycle racers are required to safety wire certain items so a lot of the local bike shops sell it.

    Yes, thanks. We ended up ordering it from them, along with a 12 pt. socket needed for the bolts.

    Someone said lifetime supply. I'm not so sure about that. This is for Wilwood two-piece front and rear rotors. Each rotor has 12 bolts x 4 rotors. Since the car is used extensively on the track, I expect to go through two sets of front rotors a year, and one set of rears. Should be interesting to see how long the wire ends up lasting.... or more interesting, how long the rotor sets end up lasting.

    The 316 (which is supplied in hard temper) is probably not the best choice. The McMaster site responds with this to "safety wire" as a search:

    Material Multipurpose Stainless Steel (Type 302/304)
    .032" Wire Diameter
    20 AWG 1/4 lb. Spool 91' 8860K14 $7.06

    Still a lifetime supply.

    (I love McMaster-Carr, but I got my safety wire years ago at Harbor Freight.)

    When doing the wiring make sure that the safety wire is threaded in such a fashion so that if a fastener wants to loosen, the wire tries to tighten the nut next to it.

    If you don't get Safety wire theres a good chance what you get will break or be damn near imposible to twist. It's cheap enough from Pegasus. Buy the pre drilled bolts from them too. Trying to drill grade 8 bolts is not fun. I have one roll from HF and one from Longacre racing. They are in the same container and came from the same plant. Only problem is HF only has the thick stuff.

    Yeah. I buy things from Harbor Freight (China) but NOTHING In would want to bet my life on!
    An FBO at an airport is your best bet.

    (My bad , , listen to Sean... 304.)

    We use 316L in Nuclear Power.
    We used 0.032" Monel,
    on our missiles..back in the 70's


    If my life depended on it, , , I would use steel wire.
    Or....?
