Hello, I'm in the process of installing an electronic ignition and the ignition controller needs to be wired to 12 volt that is constant (i.e. not dependent on the ignition switch). Is there such a source in the engine bay I can use or do I have to route a cable all the way from the battery to the engine bay?
Try the starter solenoid or alternator - a bit hard to get to and you'll have to be careful routing the wire, but I can't think of anything else
If you run a circuit (wire) from the battery, starter, alternator, or wherever else you find a source with the ignition off, be sure you add an appropriate capacity fuse in the circuit very close to wherever you are drawing the power.
For my Pertronix I found it best to run a wire up to the fuse box. It wasn’t too hard actually. There is a harness on the fire wall on the driver side that you can run the wire down and there is a grommet in the console where the harness goes through. From there it is easy to get it up to the fuse box. Once there, there is an open extra prong on the switched 12V for the fuel pump. You can simply connect onto this prong without issue. I plan to bump up the fuse by 5 amps with the new added circuit but it has been fine as is and looks clean and factory. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Agreed. I'm using a 10-15A (can't recall) inline fuse in the trunk, close to my XDR unit. But very importantly as Mike mentioned - I'm also using a higher amp fuse about 8" from the battery lead, to protect from a massive short in case the cable becomes compromised under the car.
Thanks for the replies. I think I will run a wire from the fuse board through the console and then into the engine bay.
