http://abc13.com/southwest-plane-makes-emergency-landing-at-phl/3356220/ Wow, Southwest isn't in the news very often ... How could a passenger have head trauma inside the plane with the damage being outside the passenger compartment? S
Have you seen the engine????? Blades ripped the whole cowling off. GE Safron engine. Notice the front leading edge of the wing sustained damage. Complete engine failure.
The woman has head trauma as she was sucked out the pierced hole due to cabin loosing pressure at what 30,000ft????
The Captain of this Southwest flight should be mentioned in the thread about female pilots... very nice job on her part! You can listen to her here, starting at about 14:00... http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kphl/PHL-App-North-Arrival-Apr-17-2018-1500Z.mp3
Thankfully in-flight engine shutdowns such as these are just minor incidences (according to the pilots) and the plane can fly all day long like this.
I thought these engines had shrouds strong enough to keep the fan blades inside. I guess not! I'm assuming because it happened at 32,000 feet the engine was in cruise mode and not full power when it let go. Glad everyone is safe. I'm sure it scared the hell out of people on board.
There is blood all over the side windows aft to the one that was penetrated. Pax say "blood everywhere." Passenger is in critical condition from head trauma. Terrible. I flew swa Sunday and avoided the red line on the engine like Terry pointed out about the blade line. I sat a row in front of emergency exit. That window is 4 behind emergency...
This one had explosive shrapnel that punctured the hull and fatally wounded a passenger as well as injuries to seven others. Gal pilot did a cool job of getting the plane back to the airport.
I found these and didn't realize at first the window had be compromised, just the window frame... looking closer... wow! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes her arms and upper body were sucked out the window and passengers pulled her back in and they got blood on them too. Horrible way to die. I recall a pilot being sucked out the cockpit window partially but survived.
I'm not a pilot but she was incredibly calm given the situation. Interesting to listen to the ATC moving stuff around.
I saw a version of that in early reporting. not sure if that was poor "eyewitness testimony" or what.
Thanks. I was more referring to the info about the SWA incident; I hadn't seen the reports that a passenger was partially sucked out.
Here: British Airways Captain... sucked halfway out, Steward held onto his belt and leg... steward even got frostbite... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_5390
She was an F-18 pilot and instructor in the Navy before joining Southwest. https://heavy.com/news/2018/04/tammie-jo-shults-pilot-southwest-flight-1380-engine-hero/
You’re a pilot so the tape is probably old news and normal to you. I listen to it and just think she’s a boss. Same for the atc guy when he connects what’s going on. Everyone on point.
