You sound like a snooty flyer.........................................and I agree 100% with you:) It took Melodie a while to learn how I like to travel and you pay more for a good reason. Comfort, etc. I have been one three long flights, 13 hours, SFO to Kowloon and have paid the fare for a business class upgrade and do not regret any of it, especially with sick people that you mentioned. Though the air is recirculated, my peabrain tells me that you have a lesser chance getting sick if your seating area is less crowded,i.e.: Biz class Vs coach.

For starters this actually isn't anything new. Am I the only one that remembers when Southwest used to give out large A, B, and C plastic boarding passes that were a different color each flight?

And as for quality, the prices are hard to beat, the service is top notch, and they have the SAFEST record out of all of the major airlines in the United States so it is obvious the machinery isn't crap.

You also have to love them for buy a ton of oil futures a few years ago when oil was $20/barrel.

So what exactly is bad about it other than not having assigned seating?

If you want faster boarding load the back of the bus first, no exceptions. That way very few people are waiting while others are stuffing the overheads. Plus, if you're first class, you don't have to look at all of the riff-raff walking past... they're already in ;)

No, limit carry-on's to bags the size of computer cases (or less) and the plane will board in 1/4 the time. I'm 100% for that. I'm sick of all the people that tie up an isle while trying to stuff a 600 pound bag in the overhead. Another thing that cracks me up are all the people that stand up and go nowhere for 20 minutes once the plane stops at the gate!

I flew Alaska on Fri up to PDX since it fit my work schedule better then SWA even though I had a free flight on SWA. So, I get seat 9A on AA and once I board, I have to put my carry on back by 13. When I get to pdx, I have to do the stupid backward seat crawl to get my bag. Get on SWA this evening out of PDX, boarding group A, walk on to the plane, straight back to 17F and set my bag up, no issue. Everyone that boarded could find a spot for their bag and for the 1.40min flight that took 1.25min, I am happy, especially I since I flew for free. For short flights, SWA kicks ass. Anything longer then 2 hours, I'll fly a major, but so much is 1.5-2 hours away from the bay that we can fly anywhere for cheap.
