I read that Matt Murphy, caught Barry Bonds' 756 home run ball might be charged a souvenit tax. What is that about? He caught the ball, it was free, except for the battle for it. How can he be charged a tax? I dont understand how he can be taxed on something that was free. He did not win something from a game show and has to pay taxes on his winnings. It is a baseball. Fans of baseball can put a value on it by bidding on it, but other than that it is a home run ball. Please explain this. thanks

that was his reason for selling it. i personally think it's stupid to be charged taxes on something that was caught on a fly. i've got a ton of baseballs from hanging around busch stadium, during bp, should i have to pay the 10 cent tax on each and every one of these balls i have? i think not.

He shouldn't be charged a tax unless he sells it. Then he would pay income tax on it. Souvenir tax--that's the gov't working for you! Someone please kill the government. :(

That is not cool at all, i figure he paid the "souvenir tax" at the gate. After all, nobody asked him to return the ball, did they?
