Falcon Heavy - first launch in 3 years Jump to 13:00 for launch (great view after rocket clears fog) 3 new boosters. Center booster is sacrificed for extended burn. (no landing legs or grid fins) At 22:00, watch top right box. You can see other booster's landing burn below. (staggered landing) .
Not ideal, but, launch is computer controlled. >>> West coast Vandenberg AFB launch site is famous for it's thick fog. Such is life on the coast, whether east or west. .
SpaceX seems far more liberal with the weather than Nasa. They launched a rocket when there was a lightning storm in Orlando and Nasa never did anything like that.
Liberal is not an adjective used in engineering (something my graduate advisor enlightened me of a long time ago). You could say less conservative, but in terms of SPACE-X they are just less encumbered by regulatory oversight, both within and without.
Space-X believes in test, fail, test some more and fail less, and then eventually reliable ops. NASA is, to understate the case, risk averse, as is USAF.
Remember reading that Musk said something to the effect that: "You have to blow thing up to make progress"...I remember thinking, during the early failures of trying to land 1st stage boosters on a ship deck, boy is that stupid!
